Because in reality the expiration date is only a suggested shelf life. The product doesn't know to just stop working on a given date. It's honestly one of the biggest scams to get people to buy a new product based on an expiration date. I work in supply chain and see so many items get tossed because of an expiration date. From a Harvard study: "90% of more than 100 drugs, both prescription and over-the-counter, were perfectly good to use even 15 years after the expiration date." (https://www.health.harvard.edu/st...20to%20use.) YMMV

These are pretty useless. I know of multiple people who ended up with Covid and for all of them the kit showed negative. Only a PCR test confirmed the infection.
These are pretty useful. I know my family who ended up with Covid and for all of us the kits showed positive. A PCR test also confirmed the infection for me.

How can you just extend an expiration date? Seems shady to me
It has to do with the stability of the chemistry. Since obviously these tests were pretty new, they were given a short expiration date as the tests could not prove stability and reliability beyond that date since there weren't tests to see if they could be stable beyond that point. Given more time to conduct lab tests, these tests that were given extended expiration dates since they did retain stability and reliability past the original expiration date.

At this point it doesn't really matter if it makes sense or not.

should I pitch the testing kits that I have in my cupboard from over a year ago?
Might they be expired and order new ones?
don't toss expired test kits until you've checked here:

That's good to hear. Kindly post the links to the tests, who ran them and who funded those tests. Trust but verify, right?
