Technically 40 month contract since it takes 4 months for the bill credits to start!

whew! some angry commenters in here.

so here's the thing from my perspective - we've been with other lower cost carriers - Virgin Mobile, TMobile and they're all terrible - terrible service, terrible customer service, terrible.

So I'm going to stay with Verizon anyways - why not get a new phone out of it?

The 3 years thing is a huge bummer no doubt but I'll just buy a new case once a year and pretend I got a new phone.

One thing I never do on my iPhones under any circumstance is update the iOS version - that is a guaranteed path to having zero battery life on your phone.

I get the angst but some of y'all just need to take a walk and think about life for a minute Smilie It's not worth all the arguing...

When are people going to learn that that a bill credit is a garbage deal that locks you in for years. Upfront credit or rebate back or NO DEAL. Must be the same people that pay dealer market adjustments and have a car loan 10 years. Suckers
If your monthly bill doesn't go up and you're going to stay with the carrier anyway then bill credits aren't bad.
Also upfront credit deals aren't always available!
It's not the same as market price adjustments or 10 year loan

If you want the full promised discount off the phone you do. So yes, it's a contract.
thats just called an agreement. Contracts have violations for breaches of agreements. This doesn't, you just stop getting the promo amount, and since you are literally financing the phone purchase through them, you need to pay off the phone. Just like with anything else you finance.
But they don't charge/fee you anything extra for breaking the agreement.

All this arguing over stupid phrasing... "it's not a contract, it's an agreeeeement!". 7 pages of comments, 5 pages about whether this is a contract or agreement. What a waste of time for anyone reading through this trying to figure out if this is something they want to do.

Why can't someone that understands just break it down with the actual cost of the lowest plan?

If are a new verizon user, how much do you pay per month based on the 3 year "contract"?

With what they charge at the Big 3 for cell service, you should get a free phone, a TV, and maybe even a small car. No thanks, left them years ago.

No, he genuinely believes that and it's not an uncommon viewpoint. Newer IOS versions are always larger and take up more storage, plus they tend to include features that use a little more power or in the one very public instance, Apple slowed down the phones in order to compensate for battery degradation. So for some people, the reduced battery life is a major downside or they're wary of software updates in general. I know people still running WinXP.

For the vast majority, the security patches and new features are definitely worth staying up to date with your IOS. Plus the Apps don't always have support for the older IOS versions, so maybe your device works fine for basic stuff, but your favorite app won't work anymore.

I currently have 5 lines with Verizon (from the BYOD $500 e-Gift card deal last year), 2 of the lines are being used by friends who will be moving off of my account once the gift cards are used up. For this deal, if I were to close a few lines beforehand how long would I have to wait in order to qualify for the $250 shop card for new lines?

Here's what I'm thinking - once our gift cards are used up, the 2 lines from our friends get ported away. I'll also port away a 3rd line which is not currently being used. That leaves us with 2 lines. Then after waiting the required amount of time, I'll add 2 new lines w/trade-ins for the "free" iPhone 15's. Once this is done then I'll port away the remaining 2 lines from before. The other question is will they let me port my numbers from the 2 previous lines over to the new lines? I suspect they won't, in which case I'll port them out to Google Voice first and then back to the new lines.

Do you think this will work? It seems to be overly complicated. Perhaps it'd be simpler to create a new account under my wife's name?

you break the "agreement" and don't pay off your device they pretty much ruin your credit for life and lock the phone! it pretty much is a contract, i.e. agreement between two parties with mutual obligations and enforceable by law.

Well, yeah... you're essentially trying to steal the phone at that point.

Again, the same when you finance ANYTHING. You need to pay for the things you buy.
