How strict are they on the "working" phone requiremen?

I have a phone that turns on and works, but it has a bulged screen from a swollen battery. I have another one that has a cracked screen and will turn on, but is useless as the screen is completely non-functional.

Where does it say they waive activation fees? Because I've had the military discount for years and they've never waived activation fees.
If you click the link I provided in the post (https://www.verizon.com/military/) then scroll down and click the, "Get started" button in the center of the page it will ask for your ID.me credentials then redirect you to a Verizon page that says, "Save on wireless with exclusive discounts for you and your families.
Waived activation on service" on the bottom 1/3rd of the page on the left-hand side.

I am trading in a phone with a cracked screen that is worth $50 on eBay for $830 in credits.

What do you mean I still owe the remainder of the balance of the bill credits?? The bill credits just end if I decide to pay off the new phone early???
You do come out ahead if you trade a cracked screen $50 worth of a phone.

Lets say, you decide to switch and pay off your phone after the first year.

For your bill, VZW will "charge you" $23.06 and credit you $23.06. That is your bill credit. After the first year, you would still owe $553.28. If you want to pay off you have to pay that amount as you no longer would get the monthly $23.06 credit.

So. If you are the vast majority of people who trade in their prior phones which are worth a LOT more than $50, they lose money.

Does that math make sense?

The Slickdeals thing to do (since we are on slickdeals) is to find the lowest value phone that is worth $830 for trade in, and then get a cracked screen version of it, and then trade it in for $830 in credit. That's what I did. Just need to do the maths.

The only way you lose money is if you want to pay it off early and upgrade though.

Yes, you need to do the math of what your phone is worth (check swappa.com for current selling prices), how often you want to upgrade, and how much the bill credits are for. This isn't straightforward for everyone.

This is 100% the best deal out there for someone like me where I could only get about $500 for my 12 pro max whereas i'm getting $830 in bill credits over 3 years. I usually upgrade my phone every 3 years or so (don't always need the latest & greatest) and don't plan to jump carriers all the time. Will never go to AT&T, T-mobile is the only one i'd consider at this point, Verizon has been solid and whoever said "prepaid" can go check their layaway balance at rent-a-center, no thanks.

We get that you like the deal -> but in your case -> why not ALSO spend 7 minutes on eBay to buy a crapola trade-in for $35, and sell your 12 pro max for $500? Even after fees, you're $400 ahead.

Ultimate 3 lines 150, plus 3 lines 120, what's the tax /fee rate on top of it? 25% or more?

I also have a 12 Pro Max, and I am literally selling it on Swappa for $500 at the moment and bought another cracked screen phone from my local sketchy cell phone store to trade in for $830 credit. You should do this.

but when was the last time you switched carriers? it really depends, most people i know just stick to their existing carrier anyway. Upgrading to a 3yr bill credit/contract does not change anything.

maybe for some, this is a downside

Call - yeh you lose the shop card but keep your grandfathered plan which is worth way more than a shop card.

Took me all of 30-45 minutes to:

1. Pay off the last month on two devices

2. Order and give payment for the two new iPhones

Order on the phone with Verizon and keep your plan, it's the best way to upgrade this cycle for Verizon period.
What plan do you currently have? I have grandfather new unlimited up to 10 lines, trade in value is terrible

Yea... doesn't work. I've had military discount for a long time. I just re-verified and didn't get to that page.

Did you actually get the fee waived, or just assuming based on the wording?
