To take advantage of the $1000 i would need to do the "new line", if upgrading it is only quoting me $415
I'm on a grandfathered unlimited plan, costs me $93/month, switching to their current $100/month unlimited plan would not be a huge deal.
Would i have to outright cancel my plan and then begin again as a new customer, or would changing plans cover it?
I can cancel the Verizon contract anytime I want but I just lose out on the credits over 3 years. Even if I stay with Verizon for a few months and get some of that $830 promotional credit, I am still ahead because I am getting more than the $50 for my phone.

A three year contract isn't a big deal to me, or I doubt, to most.

* I will stipulate Visible does have the possibility of being deprioritized. However, in more than two years a customer, I've only experienced that twice and that was when all the Internet service in our area was out and everyone jumped on their phones as hotspots.

All only offering 36 month "trade in deals" for this year's iPhone
Last year was the final year Verizon offered 24 months for a new phone "contract" and now that is over
I got my $830, will use the phone for 2 years, then pay the phone off and loss out on like $250 of discounts but at least I am not forced to keep a 2 year old phone any longer than I need to.
So yeh 36 months sucks but you pay it off early, give up some of that discount, and upgrade early. For most they will keep the phone and 24 vs 36 doesnt matter but it's no surprise when the entire USA wireless system are running identical timed promos
