Apple education store deal is better, $549 - $100 dollar gift card = $449.
From Macrumors:

"Announced in March 2022, the iPad Air is now among the older iPads in Apple's lineup and it is likely at the end of its product cycle. Rumors suggest that a new iPad Air could come as soon as October 2023. This means that now not a good time to buy the iPad Air and most customers should wait for a new model to launch."
Got this from the Apple store for the same price on release day. After nearly a year, I feel a bit of regret I didn't get the regular iPad instead. I mainly use iPads for media consumption, and don't notice any performance differences or much of a screen difference from the iPad 9. I do like the USB C, but the battery in the Air doesn't last nearly as long as the iPad. The fancy screen in it is also super expensive to fix, so be sure to get Apple Care with it.

So, it's a great tablet, but unless you're going to use the Pencil or do some PC-type work on your Air, I'd stick with the regular iPad.

USB C opens up a lot of opportunities here. Agree that base storage should start at 128gb at this price point but personally don't see this as a gate. Depends what your use case is.

Should I wait for M4 in 2 years?
I would wait for M10 in 2038, or M20 in 2059. Not sure which is better.

64gb is acceptable for $180-250 iPad 9. At $500, its a ripoff.
its buying a Macbook with 128gb today.

$450 iPad 9 with fast cpu has 256gb. The overkill M1 64gb is so unbalance and needs 128gb usbc dongle.

Windows tab come with 256gb-512gb for half the price.

Its all the same chip, Apple just added more cores.M1, M2, M4, M30 all the same.

Intel does the same with their 12 cores, more watts

If you're buying at full price, sure.

But with this level discount and this chip, this will last a long time. Heck, my work laptop is an M1, and I'm a power user with like 20 apps open at once, 20 things plugged in via 2 Caldigit docks, and I've never felt the need to upgrade to an M2 MacBook Pro.

This is a lot of computing power for the price. The M2 is marginally faster, and you'd notice for some things on desktop like rendering. On the iPad? You'll likely never notice.

The lack of storage is a way bigger issue, IMO.

Apple is king of rip-offs. $500 for 64gb is insane. And they got folks paying $200 for cheap earbuds. Sad to see people getting ripped off.

Is GPS supported in WIFI version? Can this be used as Google Map navigation?
GPS is only built in to the cellular iPads… however, in the past I was able to use Google Maps while my iPad was connected to my iPhones personal hotspot. I think it passes your location data through.

jesus... 64gb... it's 2023 wtf. genshin takes up like 40GB.

waiting to read all the apple defenders, "64GB is MORE than enough for *casual* users ! no one would ever need more than 32GB to beeee honest ! paying $500 for something with 64GB is a NON issue and very fair ! it's not over priced at all ! you have to be such a POWER user to even come close to using 64GB of storage.. that's insane ! it's good enough for watching stuff.. bc,,, you know.. no one ever downloads video via amazon prime or netflix {bc they do have those features} ! 64GB will last you for the next 4 years !"
