I bought a 4tb for 215 but I think it's a previous gen. Have they identified the issues with these as of late? Narrowed it down to a specific firmware or generation?

Here's the latest I could find:
https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2...st-wd-say/
TLDR: journalists still seeing lost data even after firmware update. It's prevalent enough that people are suing.

Edited: removed (and firmware change log indicates it corrects unexpected disconnects, not data loss) from TLDR, since that was too long for a TLDR. Smilie

Is this just a western digital/ SanDisk issue for large portable SSDs failing? Or do other brands have this issue like crucial or Samsung?

Can you suggest a better option? My external HDD just took a dump so I'm thinking about an SSD

This gets down to $250 every now and then, and is USB 3.2 Gen2x2 (~20 Gbps):
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...UTF8&psc=1

This one gets below $200 every now and then and is USB 3.2 (~10 Gbps):
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...UTF8&psc=1

There is also a 10Gbps version of the Samsung (T7 & T7 Shield) and Crucial has an X9 Pro. All are better choices than SanDisk.

ETA: Amazon, B&H, Best Buy all carry the above drives and they go on sale a few times per year. You can search Slickdeals to get a feel for the deals (search "4TB USB").

And where Is the evidence of the regular extreme version? Failing? Every failure i've seen is been with the pros, are we making stuff up now? Just because the names are kind of the same

The new Samsungs use the same technology as the failure prone Extreme pros , so good luck With that
