Would anyone know if 8Gb of this laptop is sufficient for some light frontend development? Am a grad student learning how to do some of this and hope to avoid spending too much. Thanks!

8GB is sufficient for Chrome OS as most of the apps are Online. Which apps you're planning to run.

The primary item for you to consider are whether the tool set(s) you plan to use are already optimized for Android and/or browser-only access via ChromeOS(?).
One common configuration for students is free access to academic licenses of software... which is specifically intended for installation on Windows PCs.

This devices lacks a touch screen, so support for Android apps would be a bit clunky (using the track pad or an external mouse). Otherwise this is a pretty killer combo of RAM and modern, efficient CPU for ChromeOS.

8GB may be enough for basic stuff but if possible I think you would probably be better off getting a laptop where you can upgrade the RAM later if necessary. Also, if you don't want to run linux directly or use a traditional VM, WSL has made pretty huge strides and I think it's at least as good an experience as crostini now, so unless you prefer ChromeOS over windows for other reasons, there isn't necessarily any reason to choose ChromeOS just because of crostini.
That said aside from the lack of touchscreen for Android apps, this looks like a pretty good inexpensive computer if you want ChromeOS.
You probably should consider installing Linux on a non-chromeos laptop if you're trying to learn development stuff though.

Thanks to all the replies. I was indeed thinking of using Linux (and learning at the same time). But it does sound like it may be more trouble than its worth... especially with the limited ram. Will probably consider getting a second hand Windows laptop with more ram instead. That way there is flexibility to retain Windows or Linux with more ram overhead.

Finally the CPUs in these Chromebooke aren't entirely anemic. Those e-cores are pretty damn decent in this. I don't know that I'd spend this money instead of a used/refurbished Thinkpad or Latitude though, especially considering the repairability and expandability of those, but this is better than the usual offering at this price.

This should last much longer for $225, sale ends in a few days
No, it won't. Ram is not the only factor for performance, Processor is one of the major one. That 10th Generation Quad Core CPU will perform lesser than this and that is also a power hungry one and generates lots of heat. Check any CPU benchmarks.

Better processor, better display and it is a Windows laptop. I'm a web developer myself and a lot of the tools you are going to use are not supported by ChromeOS.
FYI, the i3-N305 in this laptop just has 8 efficiency cores, no performance cores. Last year's i3-1215u or this year's i3-1315u are both much faster. This isn't too bad for the price, just keep expectations in check.
I wish that Intel (and AMD and Nvidia) wouldn't use such misleading product names.

I'm a big fan of Alder Lake e-cores with the recent batch of minipc's. Sometimes people desire looooong battery life over everything else. 8GB is the min for Chrome these days.
