You can buy a normal REI gift card with the bonus card during the bonus card redemption period. It sounds stupid and virtually no other retailer allows this but I've done it a few times now.

Even though the terms say it doesn't apply, I was able to use my $20 bonus card to purchase a $20 gift card this morning. Fully received and added to my account.
