This is relatively newer concept to me as well but after reading various articles (Some I've linked in Wiki), looks like that you can build a pretty small form factor desktop based on this SBC, with lower power consumption, as laptop optimized CPUs are much power efficient, while keeping most of the p[erformance of a desktop class Processor, like a Ryzen 7 7700. Also, it is cost efficient as well because, you're getting the CPU + a pretty high end Mini-ITX motherboard with multiple Gen 5 slots, very solid intbuilt cooling to exhaust the hot air in a specific direction like a mini PC.
Ryzen 7 7745HX is essencially a desktop Ryzen 7 7700 with slighly lower clock speed which costs alone $330. On top of that, a decent Mini-ITX B650 motherboard costs near 200 bucks. Here, you're getting the combo at $400, along with a very solid cooling.

I'm looking at this for use for a homelab project running Docker containers.

I think his question was not what you can do with it as computer but what's the advantage against going for a desktop CPU + mini ITX Motherboard combo.

I'm hoping they'll have versions will lower end CPUs to make a NAS.

Keep in mind unlike most Ryzen APUs this has a fairly weak iGPU. It only 2 GPU cores since it's basically a 7700x with lower TDP in a different package.

This is the lowest end HX series Processor which can be used in a MoDT platform. If you are planning to go for the normal HS series Processors like Ryzen 7 7840HS or Ryzen 9 7940HS, then you have to get a standrad Mini PC like UM773 Lite, UM790 Pro or Beelink SER7.

This specific series is not even targeted for lower end work but making a Desktop like system, using standard case, PSU, high end Gen 4/5 SSD and dedicated GPU.

The main issue is the mini pc form factor does not support 3.5in HDDs for the NAS.

My only question is how do you cool the CPU? If passive this is great. If you have put a fan to on it, this thing doesn't make sense to me. I have a 7700x + ROG B650i + 32GB ddr5 6000 + low profile cooler running as a server for 650$. So overall the dimension is the same as this board that doesn't have active cooling. If you put a fan on it will be larger than my server.

From the image, look slike it has the CPU fan and you need to add a fan for the SSD/VRM cooling. And if you see the amount of Heastsink it has for the VRM, you'll hardly find that to any normal iTX board, without costing a lot.

Check any of these companies(beelink, minisforum) support site and you'll find their fatal flaw.

No firmware updates. Whatever it ships with is it. Basically just e-waste.

You know how many security issues have been posted by Intel and AMD. Not even talking about regular compatibility,... updates. Hell, MSI had their master encryption key stolen a while ago, you would literally need a new physical firmware to ensure their stuff didn't have permanent malware. Gigabyte,... all of them have similar issues. All the time.

It's been over 15 years for me to see this word "Modt" again. Who remembers Aopen? My last modt were core 2 duo T7200 with Aopen i975xa-ydg and i945gmm.

$556 will get you Beelink SER7 Mini PC, AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS(4nm, 8C/16T) up to 5.1GHz, Mini Computer 32GB DDR5 RAM 1TB M.2 NVME SSD, Desktop PC 4K@144Hz Quad Display, Mini Gaming Computer WiFi6/BT5.2/2.5Gbps

Not trying to thread crap, I've been out of the game for a while (haven't owned PC in 10+ years). Was recently comparing Beelink and miniforum

It's all about what you plan to do with it. This one has a pcie x16 slot which makes it an entirely different class of computer.

I have been wondering with the Advent of these mini pc's becoming so powerful why can't we have an x16 pcie external slot. Then you could connect up a gpu if you want. And no, I do not want to handicap my gpu with a usb4 or thunder bolt cable, I want full fleged x16 riser type cable
