simple explanation: electricity on ships is delivered differently than the electricity in your house. if/when you overload a circuit, the surge protection on a power strip will "trip" and cut off electricity. but on a cruise ship circuit, a "tripped" surge protector will still work meaning the electricity will still flow normally. this can easily cause a fire and fire on a boat (especially an electrical fire) is a very, very bad thing.

complicated explanation (courtesy of the US Coast Guard) https://www.dco.uscg.mil/Portals/...evices.pdf
The launch Nintendo Switch, which will draw the most power out of the various Switch models, pulls 15W [gamespot.com]. Amazon's page says that the USB-C ports are max 20W and 30W when all four USB ports are being used for charging. Even if everything is plugged into this dock, it should still charge a Nintendo Switch OLED just fine.

Of course, if anyone thinks I missed anything then let me know!

EDIT: Corrected "OLED Switch" with "Launch Switch"; changed from "7W" to "15". Updated source URL.
This is not a deal. This is always on sale $35 with a coupon on Amazon. Just saying. The Anker products in Amazon are their normal prices. I don't understand why Amazon is marking it a a Prime Day deal.

Just FYI they have a 700 series product that is similar. The trade off is GaNPrime (more efficient, less heat, PowerIQ 4.0) for one fewer AC plug and $20 more.

I know, but like your link stated this combination of no bueno events has been "attributed" to (not directly causing) exactly two shipboard fires ...in history. Perhaps this is the cruise ship equivalent to not going swimming for 30 minutes after eating a Ritz cracker? The mythological cramp someone suffered in 1937 may have been attributed to eating a crackers then jumping in the pool right after but we'll never know. However I think we all agree a cramp when you are trying not to drown is also a no bueno event it its own right. So perhaps it is worth the extra precaution? Not saying it is, not saying it isn't. Just the perspective of exactly two recorded events and both events were actually caused by a failure outside of the surge protector makes me wonder.

BTW, a short to ground and short circuit aren't actually the same thing.
The exact process by which the fires can start has been evaluated by experts in the maritime industry and they set the safety rules. You coming along going "oh but this has been safe all the times I tried it!" is no different than a certain memorable submarine captain whose recent demise showed us why we LISTEN TO EXPERTS.

If you want a more technical explanation (not that everyone who should follow the rules on SOMEONE ELSES BOAT should need one) is that on board a ship, as painfully obvious as this should be, there is no actual GROUND to drive a spike into for safety's sake. The ground leg of an AC circuit has to be created and carefully maintained. Ok so they do that, then what? The surge protectors work by intentionally shorting between the hot leg and the ground leg ALL THE TIME. Normal operation of one of these MOV style protectors only causes a few millivolts to head toward ground, not a big deal and not even onboard a ship, until the fragile balance of the electrical system tips (perhaps due to hundreds of idiotic cruise passengers going 'but those rules don't apply to me because i tried it once and nothing bad happened'.) When that happens, the mere presence of the device causes the fire because its the one interfering with the normal operation of the ground circuit. Take the device away, and the fire risk is gone.

I didn't say the experts were wrong (or right). Or would you like to quote me?

I said (paraphrasing so you don't get confused) 'two indirect cases attributed out of 8 billion people might be overly cautious.'

Do you understand the massive difference?

And you are just copying and pasting said "experts" because you think it applies here. FYI, there are many shipboard power distribution systems. To pretend there is a single one when there is a boat involved shows you have no understanding of the soapbox you now stand atop of.

Technical explanations are supposed to be technically accurate nor do they normally go off into rants about "idiotic cruise passengers" among other non-technical topics.

No, you remove a single theoretical contributor to a very specific cause of a fire under a highly specific set of circumstances. Removing a banana peel off the 13th floor bathroom in a high rise doesn't magically make the risk of falling anywhere else in the building "gone."

BTW, the "experts" also say your smartwatch not being in airplane mode will also cause a 747 to crash. How many times have you said "'but those rules don't apply to me because i tried it once and nothing bad happened" Wink

I got another one that costs quite a bit less, does the same thing, and arguably better designed

the back ports of the anker are going to be a real PITA against a wall, hence a top mount is better IMO.

Maybe you have to be signed into your account to see it? If I open the link in a new incognito browser, I don't see the sale price. If I open the link to my signed in Amazon page, I see the $41.99 (even now) and could add it to my cart for that price.

Nintendo switches are picky with chargers. I have 45 watt PD chargers that dont work on the switch.

Because "Prime Day" is a farce. Always has been and probably always will be.
