Remember this latest generation cannot transcode well. Go with an older 920+ if you need transcoding.

I was looking for $580, that was the price on the last sale a couple weeks ago. And it wasn't even Prime Sale just a regular sale.

have a couple of the ds920+ and was just looking on ebay to see whats on there. looks like they are going for right around $500 bidding. else they are almost $1K! O.O
OMG. Isnt the transcoding issue merely with 4K content? Or am I missing something there? The transcoding is that watching on your IPAD or cellphone?

It's going to be moot soon anyways as everyone is switching to AV1, which the DS920 doesnt support.

Transcoding basically makes media file much more efficient for playback... your ipad or phone could probably play any file natively via software decoding but having the file transcoded to a friendlier codec and resolution will make the playback much more smoother and save both battery life and network bandwidth. But like i replied above, most of the big names are switching over to AV1 which only a handful of chips currently support (Latest Geforce/Radeon cards, Intel Arc GPU, Snapdragon 8 Gen2), not even the Apple M2 supports AV1 natively.

yes, its where the nas is doing the transcoding and not your viewing device. thats why you want a ds920+ that has the better processor (Than say the ds923).

This NAS is weak. It can't even play plex 4k. Returned mine from last deal. I was hoping of upgrading its RAM and adding ssd, but the bottleneck is at AMD cpu.

I think this topic of transcoding, while valid, has been over-exaggerated. You'll only run into issues if you're trying to stream 4K on a potato. Any (relatively) modern device should have very minimal issues handling the media files.

As someone mentioned, your smartphone or tablet could easily play the file natively, though I wouldn't expect or need to watch a native 4K movie on a 6in or even 11in screen. For this, 1080p or even 720p is more than enough.

My DS1515 and DS1520 are running right next to me like they have for years. 58TB of total space.

If you absolutely have to transcode on your NAS for some reason, it sounds like that could be a concern. However, I've always configured my setup to stream the files to endpoint devices (phones, tablets, Shield) to have them decode, and it's worked great. The oldest device (Shield) plays 4K content fine, and it means I don't have to sweat the specs of my NAS.

But I stream everything locally over gigabit copper or a good WAP, so I have that luxury. If you're streaming remotely and are very bandwidth sensitive, transcoding makes far more sense. I just don't want people to think that's the only way to share media.

This is a NAS thread, and I was going to talk about DAS. But I thought about it some more, and you guys are looking for a NAS. I should KEEP IT SIMPLE!
Enjoy the NAS discussion.

Folks, your thoughts on any justification for a dedicated NAS box like this if you have a couple of server 2012 boxes doing various functions on the network. I have installed two VMs doing NAS on them. Seems to be working good for several years now. I run RAID I (mirror).

Any additional advantage that would justify this expense.

Thanks in advance for sharing your experience and knowledge.

uses less power than a desktop box. although, you can put in more HDDs at the limit of your SATA sockets on the motherboard. I chose to buy this because it's just much smaller and all the apps are available to add into the OS. A desktop box would save you so much more money, but it's a lot of setup time to get things working the way you want. So it's really, do you value your time more or your money more?

The lower power consumption is definitely a selling point for me. The DS1522+ has a 120W PSU, but only draws ~50W access and ~15W hibernation. This is hard to beat using multiple boxes, especially ones that are dated. (I used to game heavily in the early 20-teens, an era when everything was overclocked and nobody cared about power efficiency). The sooner you switch, the faster you begin to offset the higher electricity costs.

I also really like the idea of SHR, and the ability to mix-match various drive capacities while still maintaining redundancy. R1 essentially requires pairs of identical capacity drives to minimize dead space. I think Synology also provides really good software and UI, but thats a personal preference.

I picked the DS1522+ because the included 8gb ECC should be plenty, but its nice that I can upgrade to 32gb a LONGG way down the road, perhaps if I decide I need to finally add those two additional 5-bay expansions.

Yes like you said...1080P/720P is fine for smaller displays, however this becomes an issue for anyone that is managing a large library. It makes no sense for them to have to house multiple resolutions or formats of content. It is better to have the best quality for a file so that 4K displays can take advantage of it and then convert down to any displays that can't direct play to it. Sure one can keep their content in 1080P, but now you're not maximizing the 4K devices. And even if the client devices can handle the conversion itself, it's still always preferred to have the conversion done prior for bandwidth sake and battery life/heat on the client devices.
