As someone mentioned, your smartphone or tablet could easily play the file natively, though I wouldn't expect or need to watch a native 4K movie on a 6in or even 11in screen. For this, 1080p or even 720p is more than enough.

If you absolutely have to transcode on your NAS for some reason, it sounds like that could be a concern. However, I've always configured my setup to stream the files to endpoint devices (phones, tablets, Shield) to have them decode, and it's worked great. The oldest device (Shield) plays 4K content fine, and it means I don't have to sweat the specs of my NAS.
But I stream everything locally over gigabit copper or a good WAP, so I have that luxury. If you're streaming remotely and are very bandwidth sensitive, transcoding makes far more sense. I just don't want people to think that's the only way to share media.
This is a NAS thread, and I was going to talk about DAS. But I thought about it some more, and you guys are looking for a NAS. I should KEEP IT SIMPLE!
Enjoy the NAS discussion.
Any additional advantage that would justify this expense.

uses less power than a desktop box. although, you can put in more HDDs at the limit of your SATA sockets on the motherboard. I chose to buy this because it's just much smaller and all the apps are available to add into the OS. A desktop box would save you so much more money, but it's a lot of setup time to get things working the way you want. So it's really, do you value your time more or your money more?

I also really like the idea of SHR, and the ability to mix-match various drive capacities while still maintaining redundancy. R1 essentially requires pairs of identical capacity drives to minimize dead space. I think Synology also provides really good software and UI, but thats a personal preference.
I picked the DS1522+ because the included 8gb ECC should be plenty, but its nice that I can upgrade to 32gb a LONGG way down the road, perhaps if I decide I need to finally add those two additional 5-bay expansions.
