It has a big screen, but is significantly lighter and cheaper than an M2 16 inch MacBook Pro?

This will likely go down as one of the all time great computers for me. Literally not a single complaint, it's just about perfect.

It gives me everything I want: most of the power, build quality, stability and screen size that I enjoy with my work MBP M1 Pro and adds insane battery life in a light package.

It's a great computer for anyone with the use case/money and understands what it means to "buy once, cry once".

It's for people who aren't doing any super heavy work that would require a Pro or higher SoC but still runs enough applications that 8GB won't cut it. Having 1TB is nice, but I suspect most people can get by with 512GB. It's what I had on my old Intel-based MacBook Pro that I used for software development.

Anyway, the average consumer is probably more interested in thin-and-light and battery life than they are compute power.

Should I get on this deal or wait for Black Friday deals? The open box price is really good
It is a new product (I am watching the prices and planning to buy) and I have not seen a better price yet. My guess is that we will be lucky if BF price will match it

Go with a 14" or 16" comparably priced M1 Pro.

I got brand new MacBook Air M1 1TB 16GB for $1200 last year from B&H during Black Friday.

Can you expand on the reasons?
I am considering those options and can't make up my mind.

I'm using 16" M2 MBP MAX and 15" MBA, and I like MBA more.
It's much slimmer and lighter, however MBP has noticeably better screen.
If you can't decide then buy both and return one you don't like.

Looks like Amazon now has a matching price:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CDK6VZSQ
It shows "Temporarily OOS" but allows you place an order.

Fingers crossed. Was the regular price for that model $1900 as well at that time?

I have that darn heavy brick and that's the reason I am in the market for new Air.

I don't truly understand the use case for someone who buys a 15'' spec'd out MBA. It's almost like it's for a person who isn't a professional, but also isn't a regular user.

I used to do asset management for a very large company and this would be where I would interject and ask a Project Manager "what is your engineer really trying to do here????"

It'd be like folks who would request base model MBAs instead of a fully spec'd Latitude that's imaged "just because".
You sound like a peach to work with 🙄

Agreed, $250-$300 off MSRP is usually the max you see these discounted, unless it is clearanced/reduced for newer models coming out.

That said, personally I don't know if I would spend the $200 more for the 1TB over the 512MB ($1400) version- I would spend $100 on a Samsung 2TB T7 and save that other $100.

M1- that would be 13", older form factor, with orginal MSRP of $1599, so $400 off at the time.
Great price, but last year that also would have been when they were clearing them out as M2 13" air was out.

When did Best Buy start to stock these 16GB RAM versions? I remember that one pain point was you could only buy 16GB Macbook Air from Apple, B&H, Microcenter and that's it.

Which heavy brick? The 14" or the 16"? I'm guessing the 16" if you describe it as "heavy".

The ONLY reason to consider the upgraded 15" MBA is if you NEED thin. That's the only thing the MBA15 has going for it.

Otherwise, for $200 less ($1399) you can get a similarly configured 14" MBP w/1TB SSD [a.co]and performance will be better than the MBA15 (SSD is faster in the MBP14) and the screen is much better (ProMotion high refresh rate and higher brightness), audio is better, and more ports.

The 14" MBP is only 0.2 lbs heavier than the MBA15 so weight is not that big a deal.

EDIT: The $1399 MBP14 is "renewed" but in reality is an Apple Certified which everyone knows is just like new.
