It has a big screen, but is significantly lighter and cheaper than an M2 16 inch MacBook Pro?

This will likely go down as one of the all time great computers for me. Literally not a single complaint, it's just about perfect.

It gives me everything I want: most of the power, build quality, stability and screen size that I enjoy with my work MBP M1 Pro and adds insane battery life in a light package.

It's a great computer for anyone with the use case/money and understands what it means to "buy once, cry once".

It's for people who aren't doing any super heavy work that would require a Pro or higher SoC but still runs enough applications that 8GB won't cut it. Having 1TB is nice, but I suspect most people can get by with 512GB. It's what I had on my old Intel-based MacBook Pro that I used for software development.

Anyway, the average consumer is probably more interested in thin-and-light and battery life than they are compute power.

That's overkill though for a regular user, as the base model itself was made for...the regular user.

I was thinking maybe it's for the person who distrusts iCloud backup and is heavy into storing videos. Else, a small profile USB 3.1 (or even the new gen 2s) could easily work.

Just feels like what someone who had $1500 to spend would buy....while If I did, I'd get a lower spec'd 14'' MBP and call it a day. Many pros are still working on '18-'19s at my last job, so a "pro-consumer" could make like a bandit at a similarly priced MBP.
God forbid someone wants to do some light photo processing or manage large spreadsheets on a thin and light form factor on something that isn't a brick like the MBPs or unreliable like modern day Lenovos.

It's okay to spend a little extra on future proofing or just in case you may need it down the road. Not every purchase has to be perfectly efficient for most of us. Simplicity is a feature too.

….still overkill no matter how you slice it. Even your example is VERY light for such a highly spec Air. The base would fit that person with ease.

This is pretty close to the price point of MBP.... the only upgrade would be the SSD from using 2 chips

And it being only best buy pro members makes this an even worse deal

I agree !! I bought a Dell XPS 13 plus with 32gb RAM and 1TB storage thinking I loved the design and sleek and paid premium price for that.
That machine is a heat pump. No matter how you can change the settings, simple browsing heats the dumb unit. No resolution from Dell whatsoever.
Now I am returning that and getting one of these MBA from BB with 512gb and 16gb RAM.

The ONLY reason to consider the upgraded 15" MBA is if you NEED thin. That's the only thing the MBA15 has going for it.

Otherwise, for $200 less ($1399) you can get a similarly configured 14" MBP w/1TB SSD [a.co]and performance will be better than the MBA15 (SSD is faster in the MBP14) and the screen is much better (ProMotion high refresh rate and higher brightness), audio is better, and more ports.

The 14" MBP is only 0.2 lbs heavier than the MBA15 so weight is not that big a deal.

EDIT: The $1399 MBP14 is "renewed" but in reality is an Apple Certified which everyone knows is just like new.
I keep going back and forth between this deal and the Amazon deal.

My current mb pro (2017) is now considered vintage and not compatible with macOS Sonoma. The Amazon deal is great but since it's a 2021 model it will be vintage in 3 years and is what's keeping me from pulling the trigger.

How do yall factor this in with these deals?

I would just use your current Macbook Pro with Ventura until you actually run into an issue being on the older OS and need a new computer. You can always update to Sonoma with OpenCore Legacy patcher too.

If you actually need a laptop right now and just use an Apple laptop as a Facebook machine like 99 percent of people it's a pretty easy choice. Go with the Macbook Air 15 inch. You're not going to notice any difference with HDR, cpu, 120 hz display just browsing the web. If you're one of those edge cases that actually need the Pro or need "the best" then go with the 14 inch.

If you're concerned about OS updates then just wait for an M3 Macbook.

Can you expand on the reasons?
I am considering those options and can't make up my mind.
Sure.

Better screen. More ports. Better processor. Higher refresh rate. The only thing the m2 air has going for it over an m1 MBP at the same price is the weight. If you need a super light laptop, you really can't do better than an MBA, but if you can handle a few ounces then the MBP is the clear winner.

lol really. I have had a surface book 3 since 2020 for WFH and it's been fantastic. Most desktops I've built are still running great years later, I just upgrade because I want to.

Yes, though, if you buy a $200 Best Buy special it will likely not last very long.
