I worked in a data center for 7 years and was seeing drives of all brands fail daily. We also used various types of drives there, consumers and enterprise/DC level drives. A 10 hour shift, there are days you would replace 20+ drives and days you would replace 0 (not many of those)

Why don't you guys buy refurbished off ebay bellow $10 per TB. I'm doing RAID 5 anyway so if one fails I can just warranty it without any downtime nor data loss
You should be doing raid 6 with multi tb disks. You are going to hit a soft fail at some point with very large drives during a rebuild and the rebuild will fail. Raid 5 is obsolete

In the last several years RAID 5 has been losing its popularity and here is why.

During the rebuild RAID controller need to read the all data from all the remaining disks in the array to be able to recover the lost data onto the hot spare disk. This rebuild process is also known as resilvering. If, at any moment of the rebuild process, the RAID controller fails to read the data it will halt the resilvering and the array will be left in unusable state, which practically means all your data is lost. Yes, one bad block can invalidate your 50TB RAID 5 array.

So, what are the chances to face this issue? Most manufacturers say that you should expect at least one Unrecoverable Read Error (URE) every 10^14 bits for commodity hard drives. For enterprise level disks these chances are slightly better – one error per 10^15 read bits. Converting this number to terabytes we should expect 1 URE per each 12.5 TB and 125TB reads accordingly.

The magnetic hard disks have grown in size tremendously over the last decade and became very affordable. I just checked the prices on eBay – you can buy 10TB drive for only $400.

So, if you blindly follow these numbers your RAID 5 array of 5 x 3TB disks has almost 100% chance of URE during the rebuilding process.

On top of that you can add the higher chances of the second drive failure before the failed data is rebuilt. Which makes RAID5 very impractical in large arrays.

I'm glad I actually clicked on this thread! I almost skipped it cause the title and pic only mention Toshiba when I *assume* WD/Seagate would get more attention. Grabbed 2 WD's Thanks!

Nothing about how the Toshiba performs? All I can see is WD vs Seagate.
I am wondering the same. The odd thing is SPD says warranty is 3 years (and doesn't say it's thru SPD) but I'm thought their enterprise drives had 5 year warranties.

Decent deal on the toshiba and WD. Ill still never buy another seagate ever again. 90% have failed in less than 8 years. 90% of my toshiba and wd's have survived through that time.

It seems Toshiba's warranty doesn't cover the consumers, you have to go with your dealer (here is ServerPartDeals). Only the business partner can claim a warranty from Toshiba.

I'm not sure, but my little research indicates this.

Do all of these high capacity drives have idle clicking issues or is that no longer a thing? I've thought about purchasing these but have stayed away mainly for this reason (and the collapse of SSD pricing).

That's right...I read something that implied the same when Newegg had a good deal on a N300 Pro drive. I didn't pull the trigger because I didn't like the idea of having to deal with Newegg.

Wonder why SPD is only offering a 3 year warranty of the Toshiba when the manufacturer (that they ultimately fall back on) offers 5 years for this model.

Anyone know if the WD or Toshiba is quieter?

This deal is okay. If you want to pay a little more you could get a new 14tb from newegg for $219 (with coupon): https://www.newegg.com/seagate-ex...6822185027 and that comes from seagate 5 year warranty instead of 3 year SPD warranty

Not everybody has RAIDs (myself either), that's why I think.

Nobody has mentioned if choosing free UPS 2nd day air vs. ground is better or it makes no difference to the potential treatment of the package. I've never bought from SPD and didn't know they sold NEW products.

When you receive a HD from SPD, is there any way to confirm you got a new HD vs. a repackaged one? Perhaps looking at the SMART info or that could be reset too (like rolling an odometer back)?

The available quantity of WDs has stayed around 200 for the last hour. Either they keep adding more inventory or they are selling VERY slowly. I assumed the WDs would sell out in minutes. This seems like a good deal but I'm getting worried now.

Called SPD and asked them about the warranty. If the drive fails, you go through them for a replacement drive and not WD/Seagate.

Tempted to buy the 18TB X18 Exos drive for $209.99.

That WD drive has a 5yr warranty from the mfg.
That makes me nervous too because we are basically sacrificing 2 years of warranty for a better price from a WD reseller. On WD's page I can't find a price for the 18 TB to compare. The button says "Sales Inquiry". Could it be that WD doesn't allow resellers to give consumers the full 5 year warranty?

I'm disappointed we have to go through SPD for warranty issues. If SPD goes out of business (I have no idea if they are a big or small company), would WD take care of us within the 3 years or we'd be SOOL?

When someone gets 1 of these new WD HDs, what does it say when you look up the serial number on WD's warranty check?

I've used very few Toshiba HDs and they were much lower capacity, so I don't have enough useful experience with Toshiba, but I know about WD and Seagate. Like most people I would pick WD. The Toshibas would likely sell a lot better if anyone posted any useful and convincing info about Toshiba's quality. No, I don't have time to research it myself. It's faster to pick a known quantity... WD.

part of the reason why the price is lower. I'm going to skip. My last "manufaturer refurbed" drives I bought from them had two DOA.

These "new" might not be as new as they say. Maybe they were cold spares that were sitting in a datacenter? Or part of a system build that was pulled, so the warranty is to OEM?

I don't know - but not worth the hassle.
