Maybe. PRS 20% off is a program PRS is doing (I'm not sure how it actually works but I don't think the dealers are losing the 20% off themselves). Because they have a surge of stock from their overseas factory. That's why it's only on SEs.

But demand for guitars did lower this year (I think) so there have been more deals this year than usual.

One could theorize that a glut in inventory for foreign guitars - and thus better deals, means that there will be less demand for the US-made guitars. And I have seen some of that - but what I've also noticed is that a lot of the guitars getting steep discounts at Adorama and ProAudioStar became out-of-stock or 'special order' afterwards, which suggests it's unlikely there will be any more good discounts on those for a while.

AFAIK the MSRP hasn't gone down either. So... anyone's guess at this point. I noticed that outside of Adorama and PAS, there are a number of guitar stores on reverb that randomly offer good deals - usually on "mint" guitars that are "used but look brand new! we promise! They just happened to be sitting in a customer's closet!" lol. Applause

To folks scared about demo models, I understand it's a used guitar but more often than not, you're buying a guitar that has been set up already. Sam Ash has always had pretty solid customer service in my area and they do above and beyond to try and make things right if you notice something off. Plus, they cover their own guitars with their own warranty for a year which is nice.

I get that nothing beats a fresh new guitar, but some of these bad boys are hard to find even used and these steep discounts are very rare on some of these models.

To each their own though

A small PRS dealer shared on Reddit about the catch with the 20% sale: [reddit.com]
Quote :
They're doing a sort of sale to offset what they've called a "margin hit" for dealers. You still have to sell all of the SE's for 20% off, but the ones you reorder to restock, you get 10% off. So instead of losing 20% of your margins, you only lose 10%. But you still have to sell a guitar and lose that 20% the first time. Works fine for a company like Sweetwater or GC that's selling hundreds of these, but screws over the little guy a bit. Even with the 10% discount, we are still taking a big hit on our profits. So, in a sense, they are "taking care" of the dealers. I don't really see it that way if I have to continue to lose over and over every time I sell one of their guitars.

With this 20% off sale, I have a better chance of moving these online. After what ends up being almost 10% of seller's fees, plus having to pay for shipping myself, I'm only making about 8% on the guitars. Not including overhead. So basically breaking even. That's only if I'm selling them online though. I'm making about 18% profits on these if I sell them in a store. Might sound like a lot, but if we only made 18% on everything we'd go out of business.
Phil McKnight went into this a bit with his podcast yesterday [youtube.com], but that's what that comment is in response to. Like you said, PRS overstocked on too many SE line guitars and are looking to move a bunch of stock.

It hurts a lot of the smaller dealers, but for large dealers like Sam Ash and GC they can afford to take the hit since they buy in big bulk amounts anyway. Sorta the reason I feel less bad about this coupon trick working here than someplace like Small Guitar Shop in Small Town, USA.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that's also why Sam Ash is okay with taking backorders, because they'll just move more stock from PRS themselves. They can afford to take the margin hit given the scale at which they sell stuff.

For those looking at acoustics, there are 2 models of Breedlove Wildwood all-solid mahogany models for around $500 that I think are worth a look (one concert, one 3/4 size): https://www.samash.com/acoustic-g...efault_asc

I have bought from Sam Ash before for a so called "New" guitar. When I got it, it had high action and the itonization was off. It was one of their floor models with a factory setup option. There were fingerprints & some fine dust particles all over. I obviously returned it as I was annoyed.

Looks like PHAT no longer works on the DGT. DVD still does though, bringing it down to $611.32.

Not as hot as it used to be, but still pretty good.

EDIT: Alright, I think I'm done editing deals in. The big kicker on this deal is the stacking discount on PRS stuff which they're probably not too cool with (see how quickly the other deals came and went).

None of the coupons work now on anything. - I was, lucky to get in on the PRS Swamp Ash special for essentially 32% off retail

I figured it'd end soon; this deal was kinda lucky to last as long as it did. Might keep my eyes peeled for more Sam Ash deals but we'll see. Great nab, by the way!

Nice! Those look really cool. I think my favorite looking SE even, since the front, sides, and back are all that cool looking swamp ash! (I guess that means it's a solid peice of ash and not veneered on the front only). Sweet guitar!

I ordered a fender ultra strat with the 15% coupon last night. Not quite as smoking a deal but I'm eagerly looking forward to it. And it "shipped" this morning! Applause

Called into to Sam Ash and they told me that when I used Paypal, the payment method expires in a week, and when that happens the system generates a new order number and cancels the old one. Looks like the guitar will be backordered for some time, so it probably has to re-generate the transaction authorization whenever the guitar actually ships. Hopefully we'll get a new order email when that happens?
Judging this comment here they would probably send an email if it got cancelled, so fingers crossed we'll still get a guitar sometime in the future...
