Just a note for anyone unfamiliar with Caseta: this version is for the 250 watt dimmer and is probably overkill for most home applications. The 150 watt version is less expensive (still pricy). It took me a while to figure out why folks thought this was a deal, when the normal price for the 150 watt version is less than this.
These are hard wired into the wall. So if the cloud goes down you can still use them as regular light switches with all their typical features.

As for the cloud... Well initial setup requires internet, but after that it should work as long as the hub is working. Overall anything voice controlled etc. is gonna require the internet unless you want to spend a lot of time setting up custom stuff.

In general switch control is instant. Voice/app which does require internet (unless maybe you use their app) requires internet which will always lead to lag.

IMO they are far more reliable than the philips hue lights which is the next best reliable smart home lightbulb product in my experience.

Also... these and philips hue have been around long enough I'm reasonably confident they will continue to be supported they both are made by a well respected established company with a decent history of supporting things. I specifically have limited my smart devices to those since they seem the most likely to get continued support. They serve a different purpose... philips hue for when I want color and/or individual bulb control not tied to a circuit. Lutron for white lights and ones I want to ensure stay fully reliable with their hardwiring manual control for safety such as entry way lights.

If you are using the logic of they have only been around 3-4 years very few tech products except iphones would make sense to buy. Which if that is your belief ok... but I am doubtful with that criteria that you will ever purchase anything.
The Diva dimmers are much prettier and easier to use than this older style.

In for one of the motion sensor switches though, been meaning to get something like that for our laundry room.

The reason I bought this one a long time ago, even though it is overkill for my application, is that as far as I can tell it's the only single location Caseta dimmer that has the preset button in the middle allowing you to easily get to a brightness that isn't "full on" with a single click like you can from a Pico

The lutron diva dimmer does that too, and it looks like a normal switch. Much more stranger friendly.

Motion sensor works without a neutral, for those with old house wiring.

Although I haven't tried Lutron smart home accessories yet, my experience with other smart home devices is not so great, smart-home standards are still in their infancy and they have changed every 3-4 years in the past decade. 90% of the devices communicate with the cloud, and are useless when your wifi is down. Plus theres always a delay for the actions to take effect. This might be different for lutron devices perhaps their hub works locally? Not too sure, but one thing I have heard every youtube review say is Lutron devices are very reliable. May be that's why they always have been very expensive. I personally don't want to invest too much in a system yet because I feel the standards are still evolving. But this might be a good deal for someone who has already started investing in Lutron already.
As others have mentioned, the switches work perfectly manually without Internet. If you want to use them locally, you can get their pro hub and it can be controlled by home assistant and hubitat completely local. Great with setting up 100% local automations with mixed devices. For example using a zigbee motion sensor to turn on your caseta light switch. All without Internet. Or you can use your zigbee motion and light sensor to determine when the room is dark, so it can automatically open up your blinds, unless it's dark outside, in which case it can turn in your lights when you come in the room... Again, without Internet.

These lutron devices are pretty much regarded by everyone as the gold standard for smart switches. My only complaint is that the design of the switches is hard to hit in the dark to just turn the dang lights on. I'm used to them, so it's fine for me, but if I have friends over and they go into the bathroom, they are constantly cursing at my switches. The new diva style switches fix that. They're standard paddle switch decora style. And their dimmer is pretty slick. No neutral required, and drop dead easy to put into a 3way situation without replacing both switches or figuring out where the load and line are. Very simple to install.

My solution is just to not let strangers in the house (or people who can't figure out how to use a Caseta dimmer) 😁

Also, Diva didn't exist when I bought this 6 yrs ago

I am looking to add recessed lights. What kind of lights do I get if I were to purchase this dimmer switch? Smart ones or the standard cheap ones?

This dimmer switch is smart, so you can get away with the standard cheap ones. As others have mentioned, some lights don't turn off all the way, or flicker, with the dimmer (there is always a small load due to the smart switch), but that is easily mitigated by adding a LUT-MLC ($12 on amazon) [amazon.com]

I bought a bunch for my new home since we had more switches. These are great for those who need additional light switches where they didn't run the cables to. I purchased this pack and it's a dimmer with a remote for $69.99. Way better than this deal.

Thanks, I always struggled to get bulbs that turned off properly because it would stay on slightly always.

Most recessed lights should dim. But make sure they are dimmable. Don't need smart recessed lights, they are a waste. Get standard ones and control them with these dimmers.

That's a smoking good deal on the PD-5NE if you need it, otherwise the other Caseta dimmers are much more affordable for most applications.

I had to get three PD-5NE for our renovation for a few LED drivers, otherwise I put in about 20 of the much cheaper other variant everywhere else.

You raise very valid points about standards, so I am not sure how you managed to get 15 downvotes 🤣 but yes, while reliable, Lutron uses a proprietary wireless protocol. Standards are converging towards the Matter protocol with most of the major companies (Google, Apple etc.) behind it.

Just an FYI that the Pico remote has been also recently redesigned to mirror the Diva line:https://www.homedepot.com/p/Lutro.../326623647

https://assets.lutron.com/a/docum...63_eng.pdf

It's probably a better choice for Diva line and Caseta ON/OFF switches only. Probably not a great choice for the original Caseta Dimmer for a remote.

I'll add a quick and much cheaper work-around for those that have a specific application similar to mine. I have an LED tray light in my bedroom that is typically installed with an LED rope light on a switched outlet that is behind the trim in the ceiling. It's in a wall switch gang box with other lights that use Caseta products and I wanted to use the bedside Pico remote for this tray light too. I tried several Caseta dimmers (like the PD-6WCL) and nothing prevented LED flashing and light leakage when the switch was turned off. Even the PD-6ANS didn't work by itself and still had light-leakage while the switch was off. What I ended up doing is using the Caseta PD-6ANS-WH and simply putting a mechanical KASA outlet dimmer (KP115) on the ceiling outlet controlled by the Caseta on/off switch in front of the rope light. I set the dimming level in the Kasa app and use the Pico remote with Caseta switch to turn it on and off. The Kasa remembers the last dimming level (even after it has no power). I've been told that the KASA dimmer solves the flashing/light-leakage when off because it is a mechanical dimmer. Both products have Smart capability so I can turn on the tray light and dim it with voice control (though they need to be separate names).
