Apply a new $50 card and the expiration date will extend 90 days from the date it was applied. I actually made this mistake last year (had a balance that was set to expire before being used for renewal), and I worked around it by just applying small-value cards every few months.

Last time Kroger offered this was last March. I guess I could have missed it?
