I wouldn't personally support this company anymore, at least physically. They recently destroyed draft with money grab tactics and have now altered standard so much in just months it's appalling. 30 years undone by one greedy parent corporation.

The standard change is actually better for most casual players. Sets rotate every 3 years instead of 2, so your cards stay relevant for longer.

I can't speak for people that buy singles or play competitive magic, but I don't understand how that was a greedy decision for most players. (And to be clear they have made a number of greedy decisions, see MTG30)

It all made sense to me.

summary: "We were pushed by corporate to diversify our product lines to try and increase total sales numbers which affect stock value. This is a common industry tactic to artificially inflate stock value and why we have weird shit like Pumpkin Spice Oreos. Instead it just confused and irritated players and hurt our sales numbers so we are going back to regular packs essentially, but will tweak them to again try to generate hype and increase sales numbers. The wheel continues to spin."

As someone who dropped out for a decade and came back to a proliferation of SKUs (draft/set/collector/commander/masters/universes beyond) it seems like the money grab happened while I was away. Putting on my old man curmudgeon hat, when I was a kid all we had were 3 sets a year, limited to starter packs and boosters, and it worked just fine for us.

Honestly my favorite way to play is drafting at home with friends. If I start getting slightly better expected value out of my draft packs, that sounds like a net win.

I started printing my own high quality proxies and i get to enjoy the 2 best aspects of the game, the art and the gameplay. Between obliterating aftermarket card value and destroying the format, its hard to find the desire to buy packs at all anymore.

I am in no way saying WotC aren't super greedy, but in this particular instance, I actually think these changes are good. Longer time between rotations means cards stay relevant longer. And going from two different types of boosters back to one is really just undoing the bad decision they made of making two in the first place.

Sure, and it seems based on comments people haven't heard the latest news. Within the last week, WotC has eliminated draft and set boosters and created a new single 14 card pack that is meant to be a middle ground. This was done because WotC had effectively killed draft boosters by introducing set that was a better value and exciting pack to open.

Reading between the lines, this was done on purpose to temporarily extract more money out of the market and now that they have killed draft it was time to move to the next phase. They wanted this to happen so they could raise the price of draft boosters and it was all a grand scheme that has fooled everyone.

Also, the comments here about standard rotating every 3 years being a good thing. . .smh. This was done because of over saturated product sitting in warehouses they couldn't move. When even Amazon doesn't want it, you done farked up. It was never a change to give players longer-term value and actually degrades the standard experience. What exactly have we seen for a longer rotation? The meta did not rotate as expected and has now stagnated with mono-red and azorious soldiers still holding #1 spots. And bans aren't being addressed as promised either with some places resorting to house bans on disruptive cards like The One Ring.

Suffice to say, the game has never been in a lower state since Fallen Empires. I still play but completely free on Arena. They're never getting another dime from me.

Yet the game marches on and they are doing fine. All of you sound alot like "old men yelling at clouds". I'm excited for the marvel crossover. The LOTR set was amazing.

No shortage of lemmings for the game, but at least they don't have my money anymore.
