To connect to your SmartTag, you will need a Samsung Galaxy mobile device on which you can install the SmartThings app. SmartTag is compatible with Samsung Android OS 8.0 and higher. Other Android devices and iOS devices are not supported.

Any clue why it's already selling on woot? My guess is it doesn't support Google's upcoming find my device service, and Samsung is attempting to get a bunch sold before Google launches the new service? Anyone know?

Because version 2 of anything is always identical to version 1, right?

You don't need to install smart things to find your phone, but you do need to install it to use and connect with lots of other Samsung devices like watches, buds, TV's, my dishwasher, my refrigerator, etc. Ergo almost everyone with a Samsung has it installed.
That is true, but having it installed is NOT the same as using it. If you never open the app, but its installed, it is NOT part of the BLE listener network. You MUST open the app with the intent to use it and then opt IN to the listener network for that to happen. This is a much smaller percentage of the customer base and anyone who has tested smarttag vs airtag can see that very plainly.

Yes, they work with any Samsung Galaxy phones.
I believe you need a certain OS version for it to work on and i believe S9 and S9+ run at lower OS versions for it to work. But will need to confirm with soemone else on this thread

These are the smarttag2. Do these need OS 11.0 and higher?

Gen 1 worked great for me. I use them in my luggage at the airport. No issues.

This would be true IF samsung was as persuasive as apple about enabling the feature. When you buy an iphone and sign into icloud, the first thing it asks you is "do you want to be able to find your iphone remotely" and of course people will say YES without thinking about the fine print at all. With Samsung, you have to install smartthings and then it asks you very clearly "do you want to be part of the location network". A lot of people say no to that. Technically, you can still find your phone remotely after saying no.

I have tested the two side by side and the Apple tags get way more location updates than the Samsung tags, it's not even comparable. if i put one in my kids' backpack on the bus to school (a 4 mile drive) the airtag will update at least 15 times, the samsung tag will update once, sometimes twice.

GOOD enough: for finding luggage. Someone near the bags will have a samsung phone and you will realize which city your lost luggage is in. NOT good enough: finding highly mobile targets like pets or kids. You need an airtag or a true tracking device for that.
samsung also defaults to yes as of ~2-3 years ago. They said this was one thing that was overlooked when initially launched, but supposedly they fixed it.

All the people talking about "Gen1" etc... I would refer to these as Gen 3, not Gen2 versions.

Gen 1: Samsung Smart Tag
Gen 2: Samsung Smart Tag+
Gen 3: Samsung Smart Tag2

The performance between the Gen 1 Smart Tag and the Gen2 Smart Tag+ was night and day better. If you owned the original Smart Tag (no+), you were entirely missing UWB, which in my experience, has resulted in my + tags being found far more frequently when in use in Luggage, etc.

All the people saying, "Wait for the Google Tag."... It's currently 6+ months delayed and most likely delayed because of the Apple integration they're hoping to get. No surprise that Apple has no incentive to fast-track its integration into Google's tag platform. It could be launched next week or in 2025. And its a roll of the dice who is more committed to supporting their hardware long term. If Google can't monetize their yet-to-be-released trackers, don't hold your breath that it will be something they continue to release new versions of and improve the software of.

Did you get a pack? 1x bricked, 2x worked okay but only outside of the US not great in the US, and 1x I gave away and it's locked to their account.

What advantages will the upcoming Google Tag have over this?

Sorry the double post. I am assuming it's just a denser network Google device vs Samsung only.

Got the plus version for the dog and the kids. Battery life was horrible and the devices themselves didn't last long despite basically being not used. That said I paid about this price for TWO of those. I'll give these a shot to see if they are any better.

Samsung trackers are pretty good. I use it to find my house keys, car keys, etc. Better than tiles actually.

Works with all Android devices, not just Samsung. Also pings the network greater, since presumably there are most Android devices than Samsung ones.

That being said, been very happy with my SmartTag+. But wouldn't buy into this ecosystem now, would wait for Nest trackers down the line unless you need one now.
