Not Slick. Comes out to 18.7 cents/ea. You can get a 144 pack of Meeco's starters (basically the same thing) from Mendard's for $11.56 (8 cents each). Even at regular price, the Meeco's are a lot cheaper.

Usually by now there's at least one post extolling the use of dryer lint, wax and egg cartons.

I wouldn't advocate this, good way to potentially kill the tree.

"Removing it may harm the inner bark and cambium. The wood beneath that peeled section may turn black, and the tree will get sick or even die. To keep our birches healthy, it is best to wait for that beautiful bark to fall off on its own."

I got these last time they were posted on SD a few weeks ago. Similar and worked great for a campfire

$14/144 with the 30% off coupon. 9.72 cents / piece.

Those are smaller starters. Look down in the review section on that page, somebody posted pics comparing them to Rutland starters.

They got ya. That's the price after the 11% rebate. Actual price is $12.99.

The Rutland fire starter squares are around $22 for 144, or about 15 cents per square. The listed ones are more than 20% more expensive.

For camping firewoods. Is this a good starter? I've been using fatwoods and this seems much smaller in size to carry
They work fine. A little dry kindling and small splits at the start helps a lot. Fatwood is a a good choice, too. All that resin makes them practically waterproof if you're in a situation where that matters. I just put some of these starters in a ziploc bag and since I'm car camping it's always easy to keep them dry.

For the MB 800, I drizzle about a tablespoon of dollar store cooking oil on a paper towel, twist it fairly tightly and bring the ends together to form a ring. It's never failed to light the grill so long as I remember to remove the choke plates.
A jar of $2 petroleum jelly [amazon.com] will also last you forever as a fire starter, and it has some other uses too if you know what I mean Big Grin.

Buy a Propane Torch from a hardware store... tanks are like $7 refills and last a long time. I use it to start fires for the Ooni Karu 16" Pizza oven probably over 100 times this year alone. They also make great quick searing tools for meats like Japanese Chashu.

These are a must if you have any of the gravity feeder series units. I was the cotton ball rubbing alcohol guy ,but now I'm saved.

thanks, was hoping for a DIY solution that others in this forum may have used instead of buying their fire starters.

Some cooking oil on newspaper or paper towel is usually enough to get a fire going, so long as you're not trying to start a log.

Including shipping it ends up being $22.08, or 15.3 cents/ea. Still better, but not the greatest.

Shipping to store is pointless cuz my nearest Menards is 2000 miles away
