If that was the case, then you wouldn't need to purchase them as a PACKAGE to get that price. Each item is not on sale, the whole package is. Honestly, I have no skin in this game so whatever helps you justify it to your conscience, go nuts.
Why don't you report to HD and let them change the rules, instead of incriminating customers who follow the rules they made? 😂

HD knows exactly what people are doing, but I am sure it is such a small percentage of sales that it doesn't matter. They could change it at any time to require both items for the returned instead of listing a prorated price, but they don't.
Or the promotional amount is billed to Ryobi and HD doesn't care

That is not the "rule" they made (for you to return items from the package). It's a loophole. BTW, if you feel that this hack is justified, you shouldn't feel bad about what I'm saying since I'm in the wrong. Smilie
The rules say people can return any item in the promotion and they refund the value that is printed on the receipt. That is it.
Btw, you tried to incriminate me, and ask me not to feel bad?

Maybe you can link it to the "rule" that specifically talks about returning an item from a promotional package?
They don't ban it then they allow it, just like laws in the states.

LOL. I got the mini chain saw and with that, the batteries were about the same price. So I kept both the chain saw and the batteries. What a deal. Chain saw for $54 and batteries for $36, using a 10% coupon. Decided for $36 for 2 4Ah batteries, not to bother with hacking the deal.

My thoughts on this topic of "hack".

Legal point of view: this is 100% legal as each item has its own price. And receipt clearly stated you can return the item if you have the receipt and line item for it. The rule should apply to promotion item as well. If the system is set up this way, it is legal.

2. Moral point of view: this is where I think is actually 50/50. We know we are not supposed to split the promotion items but the system allows it. But that can be said for a lot of the deals found on Slickdeals. For example, there are cases there we can apply 2 or even 3 coupon codes to really bring down the price. And there are the ones we know it was a pricing error which offered a huge discount but that was not the intended price.

In short, if you don't feel bad taking advantage of a "deal", do it as long as it is legal. But if you feel morally wrong to take on such advantage of a situation to get a deal, don't do it.

I am on the side of the system allows it, I would do it because it is legal. There are business risk and this are the risk business takes on. However, if a grandma is selling a car for way below market price, I will not buy from her because that is taking advantage of individual folks who could not help themselves.

Ordered the grease gun for the hack to be shipped to store. The order was canceled for being OOS.

If the grandma sold thousands of cars below market price over 5 years, I am sure it is a different story😄

My thoughts have always been that to HD, they come out ahead when people hack.

1) John hacks item A, Peter Hacks item B = same as John bought A and B = Profit
Or
2) Both John and Peter decide to skip and buy from Ebay or Amazon = No Profit

I think this discussion is hilarious. Obviously HD makes money, otherwise they would not allow the returns. Whereas they lock more and more things up because of theft. That is different. They do not allow returns without a receipt anymore because of theft.
