Who's taking 10mg doses of melatonin? That can't be healthy, 3mg puts me out for 10 hours.
Do not take 10mg of melatonin. Not only is it bad for your brain and healthy sleep cycles, but it can often have a horseshoe effect where it doesn't work properly. Your body appreciates a small dose because it's a more natural chemical amount. I buy 1mg pills and put half under my tongue and it puts me to sleep in about half an hour.
Eating these high doses is for uneducated people who walk into Walgreens and buy the first thing they see. Do your research people.
You can chomp gummies into smaller pieces. If you split each one into four doses, 2.5 mg each, it's roughly the same as 240 doses. I'll split them in half again, so for me it's 480 doses of 1.25 mg. Plus I believe you don't lose as much to your stomach acid and enzymes with a gummy.

Unless you have insomnia and are prescribed higher doses.

Yes of course, but even adults with insomnia are instructed by the NHS to start with a 2mg slow release tablet, then work their way up to a maximum of 10mg per day.
And just to clarify my first comment: I'm not trying to say it's super dangerous or anything, it's just kind of dumb to do and will only make your sleep patterns worse than before!
Melatonin is a hormone. It is not something you should take exogenously habitually. Using it when changing sleep schedule. Or once in a while when struggling to sleep. Or for jet lag/ Time zone change is ideal. There are other things you can take that won't mess with your body's hormone production that can help with sleep. Also please do not give melatonin to children, it can cause issues with hormone production and issues with development/puberty.

I have been taking 5 mg and I usually don't get sleepy until at least 4 hours afterward. If I feel sleepy during the day after having taken 10 mg (the previous night) then I will know it is too much.
Your joints and body will be aching after using this habitually. Not to mention youll be worse of an insomniac. Also increased chance of alzheimers/dementia

What do you take for insomnia? I haven't found anything that works.

Me neither. Several prescription pills and 10mg later (last night), and I'm still up from yesterday afternoon. Still worked today, took care of my side business, fixed a few thigs on my car and started detailing up, and still can't fall asleep.
I've tried teas, baths, lavender, kratom, NyQuil, sleep sounds/white noise, extraneous physical activity during the day... I won't do weed because I don't like the way it makes me feel (and it didn't help, either). Drinking would partially work, but if you build up a tolerance quickly, you become an alcoholic quickly.
At first, doctors thought I did heavy drugs. I said I wish that were the case - at least then I'd know my problem.
Insomnia sucks. Tomorrow (well, today, *hopefully*) I'll end up being asleep for 12-16 hours and some wise-ass will say 'Must be nice to sleep all day'.
