Technically you can; but you would want a minimum of 8' to be able to cast to a decent distance

Is this one good for salt water fishing. Just getting into. Went off shore in our boat in Florida and use cheap Walmart Shakespeare catfish rod and reel and caught a bunch of grunts. Kids loved it. I know those won't last if I use them in salt water. So I need a reel for me and a couple for the kids. I could go to a store but don't want to get taken and buy more than I need. I know local they can help guide stuff and if something is wrong they can fix it but also a deal is a deal. If they sold this same thing at local store and said it was good I would buy it but likely won't be the case. Thanks
I have two of these on my boat with 50 pound braid and a mono leader that I use for snapper and other bottom fish offshore. Works great.

Yes, perfect for saltwater. Being new to saltwater, be sure to rinse these thoroughly with fresh water once onshore if you want them to last.

I have a 12' Penn I can cast 140 yds if I ever wanted too which I rarely do. I can cast this 6'6 rod 75 yds if I wanted. Most of the time in the Florida surf you want to cast between 5 yds and 50 yds.

All beginners should consider this deal if you have a boat or want to fish off a boat. It's probably OK for pier fishing but like everyone says the reel size is overkill for that. It's either too short of a rod for surf fishing or too large a reel for pier fishing. If you need parts, it's probably a decent buy.

Stupid question from a newbie but I'm trying to understand why you wouldn't take this on freshwater. I understand that it is overkill....

but to my ignorant noob brain... I interpret that as a jack of all trades rig.... It can do freshwater... it can do salt.... It can catch bluegill... it can catch "Pompano to med sharks"...

What am I missing?

It is just a very heavy duty rod and reel for most freshwater. If you're talking large gars, sturgeons, catfish then sure, why not. For bass and panfish, it is like using a sledge hammer to crack a nut. It will work but you may just look funny. Wink

It also takes out any fun fighting the fish. And you probably gotta spool 1000ft of 12 lb braid or fight a sunfish with 30lb braid. Take your pick.

All depends where you live/fish. On the Texas Gulf coast, the beach doesn't drop off as fast so the depth of water the pompano run, you need a long surf rod to reach them. Same for bigger game fish. If it's calm enough, you can wade out to make your cast easier but that wears you out going back and forth all day through the breakers and dodging stingrays.

It would make a good pier setup but the giant reel would look a little out of place if anything.

I went through a few Penn rod/reel combos for spinning reels and conventional casting reels. They seemed fine, until I started getting the rod and reel separate. I found Battalion and Carnage rods on sale and they are a lot thinner and lighter while keeping the same strength. The combo rods Penn use seem to be a lot heavier and no where near as comfortable as their separates.

You can get the Penn Slammer IV 5500BLS (bailless) for $179 right now which is a steal.

More. It holds 1000 feet of 50lb braid. Close to 1200 feet of 12lb mono. You could pack nearly 2500 feet of 12lb braid onto this reel. You shouldn't, but you could. The sensible thing to do would be fill the reel 75-80% full with a 300 yard spool of 40lb braid then change out top shot as needed for different fishing.

Sure you can, most people can cast this 6.5' rod further than they can cast a heavy 10' or 11' surf rod. One purpose of the surf rod's excessive length is to keep your line above the waves so your bait or doesn't get pushed around as much when it's soaking. The surf rod's length will also help if you wade out chest deep to cast. And the surf rod may help you cast a long 4 hook dropper rig because it gets the leader up off of the beach and up in the air sooner. But standing on terra firma, an 8' or less rod is easier to cast than long surf rods, and an 8' or less rod won't tire you out as much casting lures.

I agree. The length also helps to lift the rod above sea weed that gathers near the shore. Long surf rods also get hit frequently by the birds especially pelicans flying by. Long rods usually do not have a sensitive tip and you miss a lot of the lighter bites. My 15' rod is so bulky it is very hard to cast and only really good for lofting heavy crabs traps or shark chunks.
