Also note that it only has a single HDMI output, which could be a limitation if you use an older AV receiver. Many UHD blu ray players have dual HDMI outputs so that you can send the full UHD HDR signal directly to the TV, and the full quality digital audio output separately to a receiver that might not be able to pass through or process the 4K HDR.
Streaming has yet to match the audio and video quality of physical media.
Video to some extent may be okay, but audio is just garbage from streaming compared to physical media.

What do people do with them?
If you need it now Amazon has it for $69 more than this, easily worth it over this IMO.
People often argue that it lacks DV.
With the HCX processor it often negates much of the difference especially for around double the cost.
I agree with your Sony option, had the 700 & 800 and had those issues also and that darn manual switching got old quick!
I've had the 820 & 420 for nearly 2 years with no issues and they are the best players to boot IMO.

I don't have brain disease (yet), and I have difficulty figuring out the remotes and the menus!
Good luck to you and your father-in-law--our family is living with brain disease as well.

because the Panasonic has HDR10+ over the Sony UBP-X700M?
the sony only supports HDR10 but the sony also supports Dolby Digital TrueHD /DTS.
well the Panasonic is cheaper, but not by much.
the sony is constantly on sale for ~$178.
what about Dolby Atmos, Dolby Vision?
Conclusion.
Not a good deal

it is also a lot easier for my daughter. she doesnt have to scroll through 10 different apps finding what she wants. she wants to watch harry potter, she puts in in the player and its done. Note the first HP movie came out over 20 years ago haha.

Never understood why you would need wifi on a physical media player?
