The semi-annual 50% off Criterion Collection sale has started at Barnes & Noble (online and in-store). It will reportedly end on December 4th.

Coupons will typically not apply during the sale, but there is a free membership program that allows you to collect stamps that are converted to cash at the equivalent of a 5% discount -

In addition, the Barnes & Noble credit card gives 5% cashback for purchases at Barnes & Noble.
If you purchase something through a post on our site, Slickdeals may get a small share of the sale.

If you buy from Amazon, in case B&N closes, amazon will not be doing these sales again and it will be the end of the criterion sales. Amazon very rarely initates sales like these, they usually just follow other competitors. It's better to buy from B&N.
If you check frequently, Amazon usually messes up a couple times per sale and offers the price match plus extra discounts. Got many good deals that way.
Agreed. And with the big box stores stopping physical media it's good to support anybody still doing b&m physical media

Right… B&N are the scrappy underdogs… the mom and pop good guys to Amazon's bad guy.

thanks. That makes it easier to go with B&N rather than Bezos with his yacht & enis rocket, even if B&N isn't a "mom and pop".

See if you have a library with panache in you area which may buy these. It may take a while for the discs to get in the system and then you have to wait in line for them to be available to you, but it's not a contest, everybody wins.

What is the deal with "Criterion Collection" anyway? Always a lot of good movies, many of which are somewhat obscure. But then they will also have a bunch of stinkers, like why did they bother coming out with their version of THIS movie?? They also leave out a lot of really good movies. Who decides what is in their collection? Is it just some dude and these are his personal favorites or something?

One man's stinker is another man's really good movie.

I suppose so. There are just some really odd inclusions into the Collection. Even if they're not stinkers some are just very average, ordinary, completely un-noteworthy movies.

There are definitely films in the collection I personally don't care for but the nice thing about Criterion there's something for (almost) everyone.

We all have different tastes and interests.

Looking at the Jackie Chan Emergence of a Superstar set. B&N site says 30% off, yet it's 50% off the list price. I've never bought from B&N during one of these sales. Is the $62.49 price (half of the $125 list) price the lowest it will go? I imagine it is, but I'm not sure what's up with the B&N tag that says 30% off.

It's called eclecticism and I think that's part of the appeal. Not everyone appreciates only "good" movies (or whatever you deem to be good). Go check out Vinegar Syndrome's catalog. They do the most incredible restorations of the sleaziest films you can think of. They're also a really honest company that doesn't hesitate to do disc replacement programs if they screw something up; something I wish Criterion would take better note of.

The short answer is "yes." That's probably the lowest it will be. There have been times when Criterion titles are lower than 50%, but it's either been with a Target buy two, get one free sale or when Amazon matches B&N on Black Friday and adds a coupon or puts it in a lightning deal. It's possible to go lower, but it's not super likely to happen soon. This title is just being released tomorrow as well.

The 30% tag is likely just there because, if they weren't doing a 50% sale, this new release title would be 30% off. It probably was 30% off yesterday. It's currently superseded by the 50% off sale, and thus it's meaningless. B&N doesn't have the most awesome website.

Ah yes, only catch is you'll get your $10 bonus rewards (up to max of $100 bonus rewards total) sent to your email on file in January 2024. No biggie if you're saving up for the next Criterion sale, just realize it's not an instant $10 extra up front.

Checked all the films on my "Criterion List" and ended up buying a few on Amazon for less, and a whole lot more from Barnes and Noble for less than Amazon.

Been waiting on this sale for a while since I missed the last one! Picked up:

Princess Bride 4K
The Red Shoes 4K
Shaft 4K
Le Cercle Rouge 4K
Devil in a Blue Dress 4K
Blow Out 4K
Menace II Society 4K
Triangle of Sadness 4K
Mulholland Drive 4K
Double Indemnity 4K
Citizen Kane 4K
Dazed and Confused 4K
Barry Lyndon Blu-ray

And a copy of Nightmare Before Christmas 4K cuz why not lol?

How'd I do on my Criterion picks? I believe Thelma and Louise and Wall-E 4K discs are the only Criterion films I have in the collection up to now.
