The semi-annual 50% off Criterion Collection sale has started at Barnes & Noble (online and in-store). It will reportedly end on December 4th.

Coupons will typically not apply during the sale, but there is a free membership program that allows you to collect stamps that are converted to cash at the equivalent of a 5% discount -

Barnes & Noble Rewards Program [barnesandnoble.com]

In addition, the Barnes & Noble credit card gives 5% cashback for purchases at Barnes & Noble.
If you purchase something through a post on our site, Slickdeals may get a small share of the sale.

If you buy from Amazon, in case B&N closes, amazon will not be doing these sales again and it will be the end of the criterion sales. Amazon very rarely initates sales like these, they usually just follow other competitors. It's better to buy from B&N.
If you check frequently, Amazon usually messes up a couple times per sale and offers the price match plus extra discounts. Got many good deals that way.
Agreed. And with the big box stores stopping physical media it's good to support anybody still doing b&m physical media

What is the deal with "Criterion Collection" anyway? Always a lot of good movies, many of which are somewhat obscure. But then they will also have a bunch of stinkers, like why did they bother coming out with their version of THIS movie?? They also leave out a lot of really good movies. Who decides what is in their collection? Is it just some dude and these are his personal favorites or something?
They have curators and usually pick movies that are significant to the art of film. There are a lot of classic movies that they'd probably love to have a release of but wouldn't be given a license for which end up being released in house like The Exorcist recently.

"The Others" 4k is the only one i've been waiting for, and... it's the only one I see that they did not cut to half price Frown
It's showing $24.99 marked down from $49.99 full price on B&N right now and Amazon still has it at $34.99.

Agreed, companies like B&N that still do physical media > companies that make you pay for Disney Plus for the rest of your life if you like watching the Simpsons past season 20

Picked up The Tree of Life and Mulholland Drive. I'm sure they'll announce a 4K version of TOL any day now that I ordered the blu-ray!

My guess is, it's a lot more complex than that with a combination of what original content is available that they can actually make a better version of, what they can license, and what they think they can sell to justify the original outlay.

In other words, content may have different licensor that ask for different things, the original media may be in different state requiring more or less work, the media may not exist and so on.

Checked all the films on my "Criterion List" and ended up buying a few on Amazon for less, and a whole lot more from Barnes and Noble for less than Amazon.

Been waiting on this sale for a while since I missed the last one! Picked up:

Princess Bride 4K
The Red Shoes 4K
Shaft 4K
Le Cercle Rouge 4K
Devil in a Blue Dress 4K
Blow Out 4K
Menace II Society 4K
Triangle of Sadness 4K
Mulholland Drive 4K
Double Indemnity 4K
Citizen Kane 4K
Dazed and Confused 4K
Barry Lyndon Blu-ray

And a copy of Nightmare Before Christmas 4K cuz why not lol?

How'd I do on my Criterion picks? I believe Thelma and Louise and Wall-E 4K discs are the only Criterion films I have in the collection up to now.
You're missing the most important ones, the Once Upon a Time collection, and Bruce Lee Collection. The only two criterion blu-ray's I got, but oh so well worth it!

I wish we could get an Infernal Affairs collection in UHD.

Just a heads-up to those considering 4K Princess Bride, there are widespread reports of playback errors on Sony and Panasonic players. Possibly a DolbyVision and/or HDR10+ encoding issue. People report mixed results with replacement discs.

It's called eclecticism and I think that's part of the appeal. Not everyone appreciates only "good" movies (or whatever you deem to be good). Go check out Vinegar Syndrome's catalog. They do the most incredible restorations of the sleaziest films you can think of. They're also a really honest company that doesn't hesitate to do disc replacement programs if they screw something up; something I wish Criterion would take better note of.
criterion will replace damaged discs no problem, and if its a wide spread issue its easy to get replacements. I just recently got replacements for all the discs in The World of Wong Kar Wai set which had known issues with skipping.

I have no direct experience, but from reading on Reddit some people got pushback from Criterion on replacing faulty 4k Princess Bride discs. So it may be easiest to do return/replace through B&N if you have any issues with a disc.

I'd love to browse the site but it seems completely unusable. I keep trying to view all the 4k movies but I never get to an actual page with all the films.

Physically damaged discs, yes. Issues that occur during mastering or pressing, not so much. Check out this thread from their standard blu-ray release of The Fisher King from 2015. They never acknowledged or did anything to correct the framing issue in a particular scene after several paying customers sent them visual proof of the error. However, they corrected the issue for their 4K release of the film this year. At the very least, they should have offered a free upgrade to the 4K disc to anyone that purchased the problematic blu-ray 8yrs ago.
