That ice machine is completely different. To the ice connoisseurs, you're basically saying, "why would you spend $100k+ for a Porsche when you can buy a used Civic for $10k?" The keyword here is "Nugget ice."

Makes commercial quality chewy ice in the comfort of your home. A true commercial one will set you back $4-8k.

Does the ice stay frozen in the container or does it slowly melt if you don't use enough?
It melts but gets replenished when the water level goes above a certain threshold. The catch basin for the ice isn't refrigerated, so although it's colder in there (since it's a pile of ice) it will slowly melt over time and repeat the ice making cycle.

I'm in the same boat. CFA nugget ice is $1.59 for a 5lb bag. I can go through about 2-3 a week. $4.77 a week = $248 a year, so would take a little over 2 years for me to see any monetary savings from this machine, assuming CFA ice doesn't go up in price.

Pros and cons either way. Pros are that you could probably use it at parties and events instead of going out to buy ice, but minimal savings there versus just buying a couple extra bags. You would always have a way to make ice right at your fingertips, no more needing to remember to pick it up at CFA. If the machine lasts 2+ years (which it will since Costco warranty) then you'll save money in the long run.

Cons would be added expense for filters (whatever that is) and having the maintain the equipment and keep it clean, etc, versus just throwing out an empty bag from CFA when it's empty. Much higher upfront cost instead of paying $1.59 x however many bags you use, per week.

Tbh, for me it's probably closer to 3 years to break even, as I'd probably use only purified water in the machine, which is more expensive than tap. And with filters and everything on top of it, can't really decide if it's worth it.
You're not using this unit for parties, unless you plan on having very small parties. It makes 24 lbs of ice a day but unless you're shoveling it into a cooler you're not going to have more than a couple of pounds on hand at any one time.

Financial ROI isn't what you're looking for here, it's convenience. Yes, the machine requires maintenance, but you'll never have to go out and get ice (which itself has it's own costs, depending on whether you are already near/at a fast food restaurant to buy the ice or have to drive to get there).

These only really last with distilled water and a monthly or bi monthly cleaning. I attribute my last opal 2.0 breaking down to the a genuine opal filter i bought from amazon. ended up making the water going into the reservoir worse, not better for some reason. also the water pull is significantly louder since the filter really limits the water pump.

I'm about ready for a new refrigerator but I'm still waiting for someone to make one that dispenses this kind of ice.

Sonic or Chick fil a ice. its called nugget ice. you can chew it without hurting your teeth like regular ice you get anywhere else. Some people love it because they love to chew on their ice. To me, it just waters down my drink faster because of how smell they are.

Sonic ice, if you have had it. Small nuggets that you can chew without breaking a tooth.

So the water that melts gets used again to make new cubes? That's pretty awesome. I

I find that if i have ice in my water, i drink a lot of it. The ice makers on fridges are crap these days and is genearlly the first thing to die.

Mine gets cleaned at best once every other month. We have very hard water. Just have to use vinegar and let it soak. We dont use a filter.
