Budget laptop with a great display and fast CPU.

Compared to the Tuf A16 for $750: https://slickdeals.net/f/17023603-asus-tuf-gaming-a16-16-fhd-165hz-ryzen-7-7735hs-rx-7600s-8gb-16gb-ddr5-512gb-ssd-749-99?v=1

This laptop has a faster CPU but poor battery life compared to the Tuf. The HX processors are rebranded desktop models so lack some power saving features. The display is a little bit nicer (400 vs 300 nit), but they are both good displays, with good color gamut and response. 4050 vs 7600s is pretty much a toss up for gaming.

I agree both are good units. I would give the edge to the Acer Predator due to the newer tech and better screen. I don't care about battery life in a gaming laptop

Can the backlit keyboard be set to one color or is it always multicolor? Thanks in advance.

You can set it to w.e you want. If the product image has RGB, you can nearly always configure it to display one color. But if the product image doesn't, it's more likely to be single color only.

Been thinking about a gaming laptop mostly to run Dota 2 when at my partner's house as a secondary machine. I imagine this would work great as that but also considering the Asus TUF A16. Reading about the TUF has me a bit scared since many people have had weird issues with that device. Not finding as much on this particular model though in terms of overall stability.

Can you still overclock Nvidia with Nvidia inspector?

Give it a try... if not, use Afterburner, I'm pretty sure that will work.

The 4050, 4060, and 4070 are all voltage limited.... and top out in the 90-105W range even though 140W is allowed.

Ordinarily a laptop GPU is power limited, so top performance is achieved by both undervolting and overclocking, but there is no reason to UV with these. I got >10% boost by UV and OC on my 2060 laptop.

Don't forget to OC the vram to the max!

pulled the trigger! my ideal is 13500HX+4060, but since only game I play is dota2 and wow classic, 4050 would be totally fine

This laptop didn't trigger my deal alert since it doesn't actually include the word "laptop" in the title. Might be a good idea to update that, OP.

Curious how this stacks up against the Acer Nitro with RTX 3070 TI that was posted for $765 a few weeks ago: https://slickdeals.net/f/16985566-acer-nitro-5-laptop-15-6-qhd-165hz-ryzen-7-6800h-16gb-ram-rtx-3070-ti-1tb-ssd-refurbished-764-99-free-shipping-acer-via-ebay?v=1&src=SiteSearch

3070 TI has a little (edit: decently [notebookcheck.net]) higher benchmarks than the 4050, but i5-13500HX scores a little higher than the Ryzen 7 6800H. Would prefer a slightly smaller screen, so probably waiting to see what else Black Friday brings, but I like these Acer deals popping up.

Which one is better (laptop versions): a 140w rtx 4050, or a 90w rtx 4070?

Oh, I am so tempted. These Predator laptops are rugged. I'm using my Predator 17 right now to type this and it has been through a LOT! I've never had any problems with it.

For those with a laptop without an optical drive. Do you miss them? Mine has a bluray burner. I guess buying an external one is cheap enough now.

The Predator line has been great for Budget laptop. Got the 2019 version and still plays most games in high settings today.

Specs look good but this looks beefy and is almost 6 pounds. Kinda looks like my old Nitro too and that thing was a brick. This would be great around the house or limited travel but I wouldn't want to go on a trip with it... you're probably not busting this thing out on a plane.

Having gone to a thin and light Lenovo (and yeah, it cost more) under 3 pounds it's hard to imagine I would want to go back to a big boy.

No touch screen would be an instant nope for the wifey.

Oh it also looks like it takes a barrel plug + brick power supply.... that is a shame. Everything should be USB-C power by this point. But gets points for expandable ram and a real ethernet port, those are getting rare on laptops. MicroSD slot and an actual headphone jack are also welcome additions.

This thing is amazing and I wish I would have waited. I spent $650 on a Lenovo without RGB and a 3050 Ti. And a Ryzen 5 5600
