Chest keeps cold air in it even when it's open. Upright's temperature goes up pretty quick when you open the door.
Chest takes more space on the floor, and harder to find stuff.
Upright. We started out with a chest, but fishing for food at the bottom is not fun. Bought an upright and haven't looked back.
4.5 out of 5 with almost 4000 reviews. I think you are ok.

Any reason this would not work as a frig? I would love to have a backup option to my frig and a super cold drink frig in the garage would be nice.

I see in the specs, Temperature Range (Freezer): -11.2°F to 10.4°F, so I am guessing it will not work as a frig/freezer but that would be nice

Can you lay this on it's back? Say on cinder blocks so it's not laying directly on the floor and there's adequate air circulation? Will that impact the mechanics?

The size and garage-ready is appealing. The loss of storage space because it's upright is not appealing. But maybe someday upright would be appealing, not yet.

You can sometimes replace the thermostat on these units with one that offers a wider range of temps. My friend has done that with a number of chest freezers to convert them to XL refrigerators to store his homebrewed beer.

Bought this a couple months ago. It's been working fine. It's quiet. And it came without dents unlike another retailer.

I bought this on Labor Day. Works great and much better than the chest freezer it replaced.

If you like to keep things in a freezer for a really long time, chest is technically better. However, if you go with an upright, don't get the "frost free" unless you are going through everything regularly. Those don't keep food as well long term. Thankfully, this one is manual defrost.
