edit: other users here say this one is good to flash firmware on latest stock.
Check the makemkv thread on flashing libredrive to make sure you either buy a compatible model, or buy one pre-flashed from one of the forum members who offers this service.
I just got my new old-stock pre-flashed pioneer drive in the mail yesterday from BillyCar11. It costs more than a new stock one, but he has purchased, firmware checked, flashed the drives, and tested them prior to selling them. Apparently, Pioneer uses more reliable parts than LG or ASUS for long term use, but all new pioneer stock is not flash-able with Libredrive currently. I thought about buying one of these, but decided to spend more after my bro-in-law's LG drive failed just as BillyCar and others say they are prone to. Not saying don't buy it, just be aware. this clearly costs less, so it can be a worthwhile trade-off.

You can get a 12-14TB drive for $100-120, so that 20 foot stack of 1,000 DVDs from your Grandpa suddenly becomes smaller.
My grandkids don't know what to do with these platters. They were using them as frisbees.
I remember in 1998 filling 3 garbage bags full of 5.25 floppies that fit into 1 CD-Rom.
My tablet has a 1TB SDXC mirco card as big as my pinky fingernail.... it only holds about 500 DVDs worth of HD movies.

has an internal 3.5" floppy drive and a 20 MB hard drive. Yes MB, not GB or TB.
Storage won't advance at the same incredible pace, but I'd still like to know what's 'in store' 25 years from now.
Yet 60% of high quality floppies kept in a dry basement from the 80s still have readable data, lol
I bought one of the first CD-ROM players for my Amiga2000, cost about $600. Maybe more. Loved that Amiga. Had one of the first Newtek Toaster hooked up with 3 Sony U-Matic VTR's I was rolling. Editing with a Convergence 95+.

The desktop internal LG drives are known for having a high defect rate (around 25% or more) so be sure the drive works when you get it. To flash for libredrive (so can use apps like makemkv to save 4k discs to a file for use with media server apps like plex), you'll probably need to flash in 2 passes (once to replace the encrypted firmware with nonencrypted, and then install the typical firmware). The directions on makemkv's website could be a lot simpler and straightforward, but the contributors who could do it don't seem to because they'd rather sell you their turnkey flasher for around $25. If you're going to reflash then have the courage to do it during the return window.
Returned it for a replacement, same deal. Wouldn't be surprised if someone else had these and screwed up the firmware.

I've got to leave him a review, my pioneer drive works great for my 4k disc collection.
