Amazon has internal BD writer drive on sale. This is an internal drive and you need appropriate hardware (sata cable, pc). Although, you can combine it with sata-to-usb adapter, the same Amazon page has those options. This drive can be flashed too to read 4K UHD disks. Good luck!

Be aware that many drives that used to be flash-able to handle 4k UHD discs will no longer be able to due to new firmware on newer stock.

edit: other users here say this one is good to flash firmware on latest stock.

Check the makemkv thread on flashing libredrive to make sure you either buy a compatible model, or buy one pre-flashed from one of the forum members who offers this service.

I just got my new old-stock pre-flashed pioneer drive in the mail yesterday from BillyCar11. It costs more than a new stock one, but he has purchased, firmware checked, flashed the drives, and tested them prior to selling them. Apparently, Pioneer uses more reliable parts than LG or ASUS for long term use, but all new pioneer stock is not flash-able with Libredrive currently. I thought about buying one of these, but decided to spend more after my bro-in-law's LG drive failed just as BillyCar and others say they are prone to. Not saying don't buy it, just be aware. this clearly costs less, so it can be a worthwhile trade-off.
I got a new model and it had new firmware that was tricky to change, but you can still flash for BDXL/UHD support. Good deal.
If, for some reason, this drive is un-flashable (?), return it! Return till 31st Jan 2024.

Lots of comments....

You can get a 12-14TB drive for $100-120, so that 20 foot stack of 1,000 DVDs from your Grandpa suddenly becomes smaller.

My grandkids don't know what to do with these platters. They were using them as frisbees.

I remember in 1998 filling 3 garbage bags full of 5.25 floppies that fit into 1 CD-Rom.

My tablet has a 1TB SDXC mirco card as big as my pinky fingernail.... it only holds about 500 DVDs worth of HD movies.

Data only lasts 10 years before decay starts, but rewriting the data starts the clock over. Many people are shocked when they open a box full of CD-roms with photos from the 1980s and 1990s... to find nothing.

Wow, you got started very early. I have an old Amiga 500 computer that still works,
has an internal 3.5" floppy drive and a 20 MB hard drive. Yes MB, not GB or TB.
Storage won't advance at the same incredible pace, but I'd still like to know what's 'in store' 25 years from now.

Crazy... you'd need ~10 thousand garbage bags to hold the floppies that can fit on a 2 TB hard drive.

As of Intel 12th gen, Alder lake, playback of 4k UHD discs is no longer supported. You can still rip a 4k disc if your drive firmware can be flashed.
Thanks! Repped. nod

Yet 60% of high quality floppies kept in a dry basement from the 80s still have readable data, lol

For the uninitiated, this can been a rather deep hole. Be sure to wear safety gear or better yet save yourself some time and a headache and buy one already flashed

I started burning CD's in 1991. Only used the highest quality blanks, mostly TY. I pulled out 8 of those old CD's from 1991 to 2000 and all played perfectly. A few of my cheap blanks like Memorex and Staples were only 50% successful, so depends.
I bought one of the first CD-ROM players for my Amiga2000, cost about $600. Maybe more. Loved that Amiga. Had one of the first Newtek Toaster hooked up with 3 Sony U-Matic VTR's I was rolling. Editing with a Convergence 95+.

There's a lot of misinformation in the "featured posts". This is an LG drive, and firmware being "too new" is basically an unrelated issue for Pioneer drives (which are more expensive but also much more capable at reading certain 4K discs or dealing with scratches in discs).

The desktop internal LG drives are known for having a high defect rate (around 25% or more) so be sure the drive works when you get it. To flash for libredrive (so can use apps like makemkv to save 4k discs to a file for use with media server apps like plex), you'll probably need to flash in 2 passes (once to replace the encrypted firmware with nonencrypted, and then install the typical firmware). The directions on makemkv's website could be a lot simpler and straightforward, but the contributors who could do it don't seem to because they'd rather sell you their turnkey flasher for around $25. If you're going to reflash then have the courage to do it during the return window.

I bought this to rip a set of 24 M-disc blu-rays for my relatives, for a 12+ month photo scanning project (7 crates of boxes I inherited going back to 1890). Worked perfect, not a single issue, and these M discs should outlast us all (100+ years tested by the Navy).

Warning to others, I ordered one of these, it was totally dead out of the box. Drive mechanism wouldn't do anything, flashing blue light on the front. Tried it on two systems with two sets of cables. Windows won't find it.

Returned it for a replacement, same deal. Wouldn't be surprised if someone else had these and screwed up the firmware.

I've got to leave him a review, my pioneer drive works great for my 4k disc collection.
