Got my order for 2 phones delivered today, and got them both activated to start the countdown clock on the unlock. For anyone who bought one just to activate for the one-month plan you purchased and unlock, the easiest way is the automated phone service (the online process wasn't working for me):

1) 1-877-430-2355
2) Press 2 to Activate Device
3) Press 2 for a New Number
4) Follow voice prompt to enter IMEI, ZIP code, create PIN, etc. When asked by the prompt if you want to "add to an existing account", say "No". If you purchased a plan with the phone, it will recognize this and automatically activate the SIM for the plan.

When the voice prompt tells you to power on the device, the instructions were incomplete and unclear. If you've never activated a phone before here are the steps:

1) Attached to the box for your phone is the associated SIM card in a pouch; remove and punch out the nano-SIM.
2) Using the SIM tool in the iPhone box (or a small paperclip), pop out your SIM card tray and insert the nano-SIM.
3) Re-insert the SIM tray into the iPhone and power on the phone.
4) Go through the setup process; I recommend connecting to WiFi when prompted to make things go faster.
5) Your phone should be activated within a few minutes of being powered on with the SIM inserted, assuming you went through all the steps in the automated phone activation.
So no luck at Tega Cay, SC Walmart. They did have at least 2 in stock. The guy was nice looking into it for 30 mins or so. He finally found out the Walmart had to have the WARP system for in-store phone activation so call up or local Walmart to ask if they have that. He mentioned the store in Rock Hill, SC on Dave Wylie had the WARP system.

I'm not going to waste my time going there, but thought I'd help others. Be sure to call the local Walmart you are going to, ask if they have the phone in stock (both stores said online they didn't have stock, but both stores did have them in stock) and ask if they have the WARP system for activation. Good luck everyone.
Yes done it three times now. Use it a few times with the straighttalk network for a few days first though. Text, call, browse then 61 days later unlocked.

Is this ONLY for the 64 GB? Not 128? Nor 256? My use case requires greater than 64 Frown
Oh yeah that is a good point to come out. I don't think there's any option to upgrade a tier. At 64 GB this could not be my primary phone, although it could be a secondary device if you need something for iMessage

It would work for my mom though. Doesn't download any apps though

So the steps would be:
1. Buy the phone, activate on Straight Talk (any 30 day plan)
2. Use for a few days
3. Don't have your account on auto-renew, plan cancels after 30 days
4. Wait for 61 days after your activation date
5. The iPhone SE is now unlocked automatically
Perfect, created Wiki with your post.

Wonder if it can be done without setting up an account ?

Like just purchase cards

Yeah you're right too. I say it best to get one as a future proof phone. I mean it already a valid excuse versus waiting for something to happen and overpay

It would probably have to stay in the states to receive unlock signal

So I've always activated Tracfone family phones online, whats involved in activating in-store and how can I insure the 16 year old sales rep doesn't screw it up?

No unlock signal needed. Tracfone will update the database managed by apple and phone will unlock anywhere in the world upon connecting to apple server via internet

Are stores really planning on restocking these before Monday? Like others are reporting, every store near me is OOS.

Edit: After messaging him, it was a 2nd gen iPhone SE through TracFone. The newest SE (this one), and the newer iPhones have most of the major worldwide bands. You should be good to go. He also mentioned that you might have warranty problems and stick to phones that have an actual SIM slot, not just an eSim.

This has not always been true. Had to power on with a Verizon SIM and have it connect to the VZW network (SIM does not have to be active) to trigger the unlock. I would not count on the above happening 100%. Metro is the same way, keep the activating sim until it is unlocked.

Make sure it's model A2595 or equivalent. Some carrier made models does not have India's 900 megahertz and 1,800 megahertz bands, only North America's 850 and 1900 megahertz. (Co-worker just went through this same scenario) I think his was purchased through TracFone.
I don't think Apple makes iPhones with different bands in US. But again, this was true a few years ago. Haven't seen this change yet.
Best to check Apple website for band support in US sold iPhones
