Got my order for 2 phones delivered today, and got them both activated to start the countdown clock on the unlock. For anyone who bought one just to activate for the one-month plan you purchased and unlock, the easiest way is the automated phone service (the online process wasn't working for me):

1) 1-877-430-2355
2) Press 2 to Activate Device
3) Press 2 for a New Number
4) Follow voice prompt to enter IMEI, ZIP code, create PIN, etc. When asked by the prompt if you want to "add to an existing account", say "No". If you purchased a plan with the phone, it will recognize this and automatically activate the SIM for the plan.

When the voice prompt tells you to power on the device, the instructions were incomplete and unclear. If you've never activated a phone before here are the steps:

1) Attached to the box for your phone is the associated SIM card in a pouch; remove and punch out the nano-SIM.
2) Using the SIM tool in the iPhone box (or a small paperclip), pop out your SIM card tray and insert the nano-SIM.
3) Re-insert the SIM tray into the iPhone and power on the phone.
4) Go through the setup process; I recommend connecting to WiFi when prompted to make things go faster.
5) Your phone should be activated within a few minutes of being powered on with the SIM inserted, assuming you went through all the steps in the automated phone activation.
So no luck at Tega Cay, SC Walmart. They did have at least 2 in stock. The guy was nice looking into it for 30 mins or so. He finally found out the Walmart had to have the WARP system for in-store phone activation so call up or local Walmart to ask if they have that. He mentioned the store in Rock Hill, SC on Dave Wylie had the WARP system.

I'm not going to waste my time going there, but thought I'd help others. Be sure to call the local Walmart you are going to, ask if they have the phone in stock (both stores said online they didn't have stock, but both stores did have them in stock) and ask if they have the WARP system for activation. Good luck everyone.
Yes done it three times now. Use it a few times with the straighttalk network for a few days first though. Text, call, browse then 61 days later unlocked.

Can the phone be activated without inputting the sim?
I just did. The call is made from another phone and the IMEI is on the phone box.

Tax codes can get very complex regarding discounted merchandise and it's not at all uncommon for tax to be charged on the full price. When ST offers the discount, it happens differently from an accounting perspective than when the sale occurs through a third party like Walmart. For instance, the technical process may be more akin to ST reimbursing Walmart through some kind of instant rebate type of transaction, which can definitely complicate things versus ST simply offering a sale price. At any rate, if anyone is doing anything wrong or shady as far as tax transactions, the smart money would be on ST doing it wrong versus Walmart. You can guarantee they've got auditors on top of auditors reviewing that kind of thing. ST probably has the janitors taking care of the paperwork on their down time, lol.
Instsnt rebate = tax after discount.
Rebate after purchase of a plan = You bought the phone first, then you pick a plan and after that they give you a discount.
Each state has different ways for taxing of purchased goods.

Ordered 2 on Wednesday night with the $45 Plan and $30 for the 2nd line. The status was "Blank" on Track your Order for a few days. Today it changed to "Pending remote Fulfillment" in the morning and got Shipped email around 2 pm.

The rest that I ordered Monday morning with Plans and without Plans are all stuck on Pending remote Fulfillment.

I'm referring to actual experiences with activations and unlocks. Their policies don't always fully reflect what happens. Once the phone is "activated" in their system, that's what triggers the unlock and I have unlocked several phones that way without ever turning the actual phone on or even touching the SIM in sealed packet. Again, some of the safeguards for noticing a problem are removed when doing it that way, but that has been how it's worked for me in real-world situations.

Also, I've never given a phone to someone until I've verified that it's unlocked through sickw. I wouldn't want anyone doing something like inserting other SIMs that might mess something up. They always just sit on a shelf for the 60 days when I go that route.
Is there a way to activate using an existing Tracfone $10 plan? I don't use straight talk and plan on staying with Tracfone by adding their annual plan in the future.

Is there a way to check the unlock date after activating using this method?

Activated mine by phone (thanks for that tip to those who posted about it!) and it activated no problem. Texting "UNLOCK" to 611611 sent back a date of 1/10/24 for unlock. Easy peasy!

(I bought mine from the Straight Talk website with the $45 plan)
I bought two phones. Tried activating on website, doesn't recognize as Straighttalk phone but then tried with Total by Verizon, there it recognizes it. When enter all the info it asks for 15 digits plan refill pin, did you get some code with yours? Or maybe I gotta follow a different process? Thanks

Each state has different ways for taxing of purchased goods.
The point is that there are different ways that such deals can be structured and it may not be done the same way that a typical instant rebate to a customer would work. For instance, it may be that ST pays the rebate or incentive to Walmart, who then passes it along to the customer in some way. Again, the way it's done from an accounting perspective can change how the taxation works. Walmart is charging tax on the $149 value of the phone (maybe not in all states, but in at least some.)

Edit: The link below gives some examples of how such differences work based on a traditional "discount" versus a discount applied as a "coupon". Obviously, it's mentioning rules for a particular state, but a number of states follow similar guidelines and charge tax based on the original value of an item, depending on the way it's discounted.

It seems like the deal with these phones is working similarly to the example mentioned about soap powder, with Walmart automatically applying a $100 "manufacturer coupon" to the phone purchase and then getting reimbursed for that from ST.

"Example 2: A box of soap powder retails for $1.50. The customer applies a "manufacturer's coupon" worth $.50 toward the purchase of the box of powder. The dealer would collect $1.00 and the full tax due on the $1.50 sale from the customer. The manufacturer would redeem the coupon from the dealer for $.50."

You're going to need to contact customer service to fix this. Myself and another individual ran into this issue. https://slickdeals.net/f/17036050-walmart-stores-64gb-apple-iphone-se-for-straight-talk-2022-1-month-service-84-availability-may-vary?p=166949068#post166949068

What is your state rate for cell service fees (you also bought a month of service).
That's added on to the regular sales tax & might make up the difference - some states are pretty high.
It appears that Walmart is charging tax on the $149 value of the phone, based on something about the way that discount through ST is structured. I got kind of an unusual look at the numbers, as the first time I went, they didn't know how to ring the deal properly, so they ended up doing a manual override of the price and the tax on that came out to 7% of the actual total ($11.76 on a total of $168 for two phones and plans), as you would expect for a normally discounted item. However, I ended up going back later for one more phone and they knew how to ring it up right to trigger the discount properly at that time. On that receipt, it shows tax of $12.88 on a total of $84 for one phone and plan. That $12.88 is 7% of $184 instead of $84, which would add up if they're taxing based on the $149 original price for the phone. (breakdown attached)

Yeah, you should be able to activate the phone on TF with your existing plan. Just make sure to do the transfer properly and activate the phone with the SIM it came with (don't just pop in your current TF SIM). Go to the "activate new phone" option on the Tracfone website while logged into your account and choose to keep your current number. That seems to work fine for many of the new phones lately without even rebranding. However, some give an error and require a call to TF to get it going.

Note that you'll likely lose whatever ST plan you purchased with the phone if you go that route, but I understand that it might be more desirable to do it that way if you just want to use your existing number and don't care about having some other random number for a month.

Thanks for sharing, I also ordered 2 phones on Wednesday night with the silver plan. The order status was originally Pending payment approval then changed to blank. Friday it changed to Pending remote fulfillment and it's been like that since. Hoping to receive that shipping email soon 😊
