Got my order for 2 phones delivered today, and got them both activated to start the countdown clock on the unlock. For anyone who bought one just to activate for the one-month plan you purchased and unlock, the easiest way is the automated phone service (the online process wasn't working for me):

1) 1-877-430-2355
2) Press 2 to Activate Device
3) Press 2 for a New Number
4) Follow voice prompt to enter IMEI, ZIP code, create PIN, etc. When asked by the prompt if you want to "add to an existing account", say "No". If you purchased a plan with the phone, it will recognize this and automatically activate the SIM for the plan.

When the voice prompt tells you to power on the device, the instructions were incomplete and unclear. If you've never activated a phone before here are the steps:

1) Attached to the box for your phone is the associated SIM card in a pouch; remove and punch out the nano-SIM.
2) Using the SIM tool in the iPhone box (or a small paperclip), pop out your SIM card tray and insert the nano-SIM.
3) Re-insert the SIM tray into the iPhone and power on the phone.
4) Go through the setup process; I recommend connecting to WiFi when prompted to make things go faster.
5) Your phone should be activated within a few minutes of being powered on with the SIM inserted, assuming you went through all the steps in the automated phone activation.

So no luck at Tega Cay, SC Walmart. They did have at least 2 in stock. The guy was nice looking into it for 30 mins or so. He finally found out the Walmart had to have the WARP system for in-store phone activation so call up or local Walmart to ask if they have that. He mentioned the store in Rock Hill, SC on Dave Wylie had the WARP system.

I'm not going to waste my time going there, but thought I'd help others. Be sure to call the local Walmart you are going to, ask if they have the phone in stock (both stores said online they didn't have stock, but both stores did have them in stock) and ask if they have the WARP system for activation. Good luck everyone.

Yes done it three times now. Use it a few times with the straighttalk network for a few days first though. Text, call, browse then 61 days later unlocked.

I picked up 2 @ 49 each. The employees couldn't figure out how to activate with a card so they told me to purchase the minutes online. I'm hoping I don't have issues

If I may ask. If I go tomorrow and pick one up and get it for $49. That means I had to have started a monthly plan, correct? I'd like to give it to my son for Christmas, but it would be a waste to start the service tomorrow. (Or any time up til 11/26 /13) when the sale is until

Yep …. and I'd also recommend that people log into the ST account using the email given at checkout just to double-check that their IMEI shows up there and the 30-day plan countdown has started. Maybe even double-check that it still shows active just before plan end if overly cautious. Could catch any possible issues if something looked out of the ordinary.
If you got it at Walmart, how do you login to ST account without password. They didn't ask you to set password at Walmart.

Go to the ST website and click the user icon to log in. Then enter the email you gave them and hit "forgot password". It will email you a link to set your password (assuming they actually set you up in the system and activated it properly.)

Got the phone today and cant activate it through phone or online cause it's asking for a "SERVICE PLAN PIN". I didn't get one on my SIM packet though. I ordered the $45 plan.

Does the phone warranty start when you turn on the phone/purchase the phone from Walmart? Or does it start when you login to an Apple account?

The warranty starts when you physically activate the phone. (When it says "activating phone … this may take a few minutes" it's checking in with Apple's activation servers, which also lets them know it's been activated and starts the warranty). Activating it on the ST network doesn't affect that and it ends a year from when you set the phone up, even if you skip logging into an iCloud account.

You can verify this using Apple's check coverage site. I have done both as far as physically activating phones before activating on the network and activating them on the network first, followed by physical activation months later. The warranty coverage always tracks to the physical activation of the phone.

https://checkcoverage.apple.com/

Update: It appears that purchase date info is flowing to Apple on these now and warranty starts from that date rather than the physical phone activation date like it has in the past.

Guys, just so I'm clear: I located a Walmart that shows having this phone in stock. But I have these questions:

1. Do I absolutely need to buy in store rather than ship or in-store pick-up via online website purchase?
2. Do I absolutely need to hunt down a Straight Talk employee in Walmart to get the price adjusted in-store?
3. Do I/Should I buy and activate a 1-month plan by calling using automated phone system or have the Straight Talk rep do it?

About the phone:
1. Looks like this can be used with wireless charging. can I get a magsafe type case for it to use an external battery, even though the phone itself has no
magsafe?

1. The online price went from $49 to $99. Additionally, getting the $99 price online requires you to activate with the $45/month plan, while the $35/month plan will work for the in-store promo.

2. I went to the electronics section and they got the employee who activates phones for me. I've heard that YMMV on this and some stores won't do activations at all.

3. You need to buy the 1-month plan along with the phone for the special price to kick in. A few people got lucky early on and were able to order online without a plan, but that seems like it's been fixed.

4. Correct, this phone supports wireless charging but doesn't have MagSafe. I don't see why getting a MagSafe case and a battery wouldn't work.
