Got my order for 2 phones delivered today, and got them both activated to start the countdown clock on the unlock. For anyone who bought one just to activate for the one-month plan you purchased and unlock, the easiest way is the automated phone service (the online process wasn't working for me):

1) 1-877-430-2355
2) Press 2 to Activate Device
3) Press 2 for a New Number
4) Follow voice prompt to enter IMEI, ZIP code, create PIN, etc. When asked by the prompt if you want to "add to an existing account", say "No". If you purchased a plan with the phone, it will recognize this and automatically activate the SIM for the plan.

When the voice prompt tells you to power on the device, the instructions were incomplete and unclear. If you've never activated a phone before here are the steps:

1) Attached to the box for your phone is the associated SIM card in a pouch; remove and punch out the nano-SIM.
2) Using the SIM tool in the iPhone box (or a small paperclip), pop out your SIM card tray and insert the nano-SIM.
3) Re-insert the SIM tray into the iPhone and power on the phone.
4) Go through the setup process; I recommend connecting to WiFi when prompted to make things go faster.
5) Your phone should be activated within a few minutes of being powered on with the SIM inserted, assuming you went through all the steps in the automated phone activation.

So no luck at Tega Cay, SC Walmart. They did have at least 2 in stock. The guy was nice looking into it for 30 mins or so. He finally found out the Walmart had to have the WARP system for in-store phone activation so call up or local Walmart to ask if they have that. He mentioned the store in Rock Hill, SC on Dave Wylie had the WARP system.

I'm not going to waste my time going there, but thought I'd help others. Be sure to call the local Walmart you are going to, ask if they have the phone in stock (both stores said online they didn't have stock, but both stores did have them in stock) and ask if they have the WARP system for activation. Good luck everyone.

Yes done it three times now. Use it a few times with the straighttalk network for a few days first though. Text, call, browse then 61 days later unlocked.

What was the trade-in value you received?
Depends on what you're trading it in for and what TMO plan you're on. I'm on Magenta Max and I got a trade-in value of $650 towards the iPhone 15 at the time. Doesn't look like that offer is still available but if you have the Go5G Next or Go5G Plus plans they're currently offering $830 for the iPhone SE (3rd Gen) towards iPhone 15's.

correct, but there is a limit for patience....no business holds money for 2 weeks..if at all someone holds, they send a countesy kind of email saying "please wait....", and ST failed to do it and as per other people they are repeatedly doing like this...

Honestly the diff between this deal and straight talks deal (with silver plan) is roughly $50..this comes to around $100 theirs $150...is the walmart hassle really that worth it? lets be honest this side show of verizon is a joke like any other in the industry....it seems to be a trend for these big players to have this joke of a lower to homeless class cell plans ...maybe some analaysis shows that there market to be exploited. I dont know..the point is, were all in for the phone..id say even $150 is not a bad deal for an SE with 5G

Seems like all of the Tracfone/Straight Talk/Total deals get way too long, they repeat same thing over & over.
Yep, I don't think it can even be called a dead horse any more … more like glue by now.

The Wal-Mart I went to today had a ton of the Straight Talk iPhone SE phones in stock but they said their particular store doesn't do phone activations in store, so they won't honor the $49 promo (since technically you have to activate the phone in store according to the terms of the promo). Has anyone run into this situation before? Can individual stores just choose not to activate phones?

They told me that it has to be acrivated by the ST guy who wasn't in the store at the moment .
So were you able to get the $49 price anyway?

Been mentioned hundreds of times. No phone rep - no activation - no deal.
Deal is very YMMV, all depends on store.

You should not need any PIN card or number if the activation was done properly at Walmart. Just pop the SIM in and turn the phones on. Maybe give it some time and power-cycle if it doesn't come up immediately. You can also see if your plan shows up by logging in at the ST website using the email you gave and "forgot password" option.
What if the Walmart workers refuse to activate the phone? Can you just activate it yourself at home?

If they sell for $49 & let you activate at home - great deal. If you buy for $149 & activate yourself you aren't getting the special deal price (SE's have been $149 at WM since late June).
If your store doesn't have the activation software then nothing you can do.

There are stores that don't have activation software? I thought all Walmarts are the same since they're all corporate owned.

Some of the stores don't do the deal and activation at all. I have to physically visit each store and see if they have the deal on display and check online for in stock ones.
