I've got some Osprey, Mountain Hardware, and REI packs. I also have an old Ozark Trail pack I bought for $9 several years ago. As far as the construction, it really is about the same as anyone else making Chinese bags. The biggest difference is in the materials. My nicer packs might have ripstop nylon, or integrated waterproof membranes, or kevlar bases. With the Ozark Trail, you'll be getting a simple polyester bag. It won't have as many trick features and gimmicks. Polyester of the same thickness will be about one-third as durable as nylon.

With that said, I just bought five of these. They will make wonderful gifts for friends that have never had a day bag. I find a very similar bag (REI Flash 18) to be part of my critical travel gear. It's my personal item on an airplane, and it's my daily bag that my wife and I put all of our stuff in. Much less prone to being snatched than a purse, easiser to stuff a shirt or towel in, and can hold a 2L bladder of mixed drink for "legal" public consumption.

If you know you will use it a lot just wait for a deal on the REI Flash 18 (minimalist pack recently for $20) or the Osprey Hikelite 18 (lots of frame for a tiny pack recently at $40).

For those who want this backpack but don't want to pay shipping (like me) or have Walmart+, just add this "preorder" Smurfs game [walmart.com] to your order. It won't ship for 3 weeks so you won't be charged till then. Then just cancel the game after receiving your backpack and you will only pay for the backpack, no game.

It's not that crazy. Sam's Club uses rotisserie chickens as a loss leader just like Costco. Maybe using this specific line of outdoor gear is silly, but they do use loss leaders.

I have this bag and even wrote a review of it on Walmart, I use it in just a simple lake/beach bag to carry towels, sunscreen, 2nd pair of shorts, etc. Works great for that since I don't care much about it getting beat up at the beach with sand. I bring it with me when I go on vacation so I don't have to lug my expensive backpack to the beach. I've had it for 2 summers now and still holding up good, it's just simple backpack for my use case and exactly what I needed.

Good info, however an Ozark Trail pack you bought several years ago is likely to have vastly different construction/materials/and even OEM manufacturer than this specific pack, so your experience unfortunately not very telling. Also, this pack is 28L medium size, while 18L you recommend is in the small category, substantially less capacity. Hoping these are nice, though, bought 8. These actually have "lifetime" warranty!

I don't think the MSRP was the unusual price of $16.43, probably was more in the $20-30 range. Either way, not a loss leader. (The extreme value $10 Outdoor Products 25L Traverse pack available for many years that Walmart eventually branded Ozark Trail and raised to about $12 a year or two ago might qualify as a loss leader, had a lot of extra features, too. But loss leaders really require prominent promotion/advertising to qualify as such.)

Walmart says they shipped it. Then they said it was delayed. Then they said it was damaged and they refunded me. Walmart employees have figured out how to hijack your order and steal it for themselves.
