Rei is financially not doing well… so they are having more sales more often to get their prices (while on sale) to be close to competitors. I usually wait to get something close or slightly better price at rei via say backcountry just because I can easily return locally and have a year to find out if the item sucks or is good.
Also, their website database has been super flaked out recently with many items not in stock but allowing purchases and no updates. So if you don't see an update on your order right away call in to see if it was cancelled or backordered

Interesting. It told me not valid on the item in cart. Maybe they fixed it. Or gender difference. or did you buy the Speed rather than Pro?
If you are into outdoor gear (and a slickdeals poster), you probably know that it is not that hard to find most things for >20% off, especially if you aren't in a hurry and can wait for deals or are flexible on what you buy.
Plus, REI members already get 10% back on anything that is sold at full price, so the member coupon is only really an extra 10% off.
It is best if you are looking for something specific like a certain running shoe that you always buy.
Also great if you want to go into the store, try on 10 pairs of hiking boots, and leave with your favorites.

REI's biggest issue is probably that return policy. Every time I check their Re-supply section. It's always a roof cargo box or a roof tent that's up for sale. They just buy and return at the end of season. Same for shoes
I wonder why.

E.g. right now Backcountry.com is offering members (free to join) 25% off a full price item and 20% off sale items. But you can also get 10% cash back there from some outdoor-oriented sites which means in total you are getting almost 33% off.
I'm not saying it is BAD that REI offers a sale, just weird that those coupons always end up front page on here when they just aren't that great of a deal for the most part.

The last few items (backpack and down sleeping bag) were so bad, I ended up just buying directly from manufacturer (same price, even more savings via Active portal). Items direct from manufacturer were clean/sterile/new. I suspect a lot of items shipped were in old retail store back rooms or grabbed from display and half of them were lightly used returns….
Edit… also was getting sick of returning in store (rei chargers $6+ to mail stuff back), and having some (not all) cashiers kind of grill you. You can tell the employees are under stress since rei isn't doing well financially. Luckily I'm almost done rebuying a bunch of hiking/backpacking stuff to replace gear lost in a move.

Used to shop at Backcountry all the time but after the nonsense they pulled against smaller businesses I couldn't give them more money.
