people laugh on why i keep buying dvd's and bluray but truth is you should never solely rely on streaming!
same reason you should have at least 2 tv antennas around the house! if your internet is down for a week you need to learn how to survive and not turn into a southpark episode searching for "internets".

Just a heads up "The consumer-electronics retailer will phase out sales of DVDs and Blu-ray discs both in-store and online in early 2024, according to industry sources familiar with the company's plans. Best Buy made the initial decision to end DVD sales nine months ago, according to one source."

Here is hoping they have major discounts on everything (particularly Steelbooks) whenever that happens.

And check blu-ray.com for the 4k disc reviews!!

If the source is merely an upscaled 2k, might as well keep the money and 2k bluray disc and play it with a player or tv that upscale to 4k just the same.

Criminal how so many are fooled into buying yet another higher resolution copy when some 4k discs aren't sourced from true 4k masters.

I buy to support the films/works I want to see keep being made. I will say a couple things:
  1. Set up a whole house antenna if you have the budget for it
  2. Streaming has the advantage of HEVC (which I don't think the 4K Blu-ray spec includes) the ability to continuously add features. It's also much more convenient if, like me, you have a very short attention span and are rarely able to watch a movie in 1 sitting. But at the end of the day you don't own the content and need a disc for the latter
Cheers!
Discs have the advantage of superior picture and audio. The difference in audio is especially noticeable.

That's nuts to me. Unless everyone has gigabit internet at home, streaming just can't compete in quality with physical media...
AFAIK the max total bitrate of a 4K Blu-ray with Dolby Atmos is about 130 Mb/s. Streaming bitrates are lower. Gigabit isn't nearly as necessary as you might think.

I'd like to believe that myself, but I doubt most people would pass a streaming vs 4K Blu-ray ABX test on a proper 4K HDR Dolby Atmos setup.

I can tell you how it will work:

Amazon will raise the price as high as they can while still being able to sell, and you'll either pay that price or you won't get your disc.

This is why supporting other places is good and always buying from Amazon is not.
Small reminder that Target & Walmart exist.

Sonic the hedgehog 2 does NOT come with a bluray. It is 4k + digital. I would know because that's the reason I bought the limited edition 2-movie steelbook because THAT version includes a bluray.

Also Top Gun Maverick is 4k + digital only.

Your player or TV do not match a professional upscale. You are fooling yourself if you think otherwise. Also the main improvement with 4k discs is the HDR, and you can't get that with a bluray.

It's hilarious people buy 4K TVs and only stream/digital copy.

What's great is how physical media prices are skyrocketing on the secondary market thanks to big box stores stepping away from this market. I go to garage sales and people sell their DVDs/blu rays thinking they're worthless, and you can easily flip many on eBay for $50-100.

Kinda funny Best Buy is going this route as exclusives are high margin and sell out immediately. I guess they think selling appliances and TVs will keep them in business.

And it's a shame so many people are digital-only, unaware of the inferior product and the fact they don't own their library. They just assume big businesses will indefinitely support their entertainment library on servers forever.

Just got through COVID where the global supply chain snapped. Everything was built around just-in-time with no inventory. Then it didn't work. Same with this and people living with digital-only everything. Their finances (stocks, bank accounts, etc.) , entertainment, etc. are all Internet-dependent.

Basically, a cyber incident paralyzes most's abilities to do anything. And it seems society is sleepwalking into this, just as having no inventory was a brilliant idea pitched by MBAs for maximizing profit to squeeze out a few cents more in margin. Then COVID happened and you had people desperate for toilet paper.

For the rest of us, we'll have physical copies of movies we enjoy with no dependency on a business shutting down or deciding to charge another fee to re-access our libraries.

It's all coming. You have sports networks you pay for dedicated to specific conferences. They'll have 5 channels, yet refuse to carry the game you want. Oh, that's another $11.99/mo to get on their "Plus" platform, which of course doesn't carry what's in their regular networks so you need both the standard channels PLUS their Plus platform.

NFL has Thursday night football on Prime, Sunday on network TV, Monday on ESPN. Now I see they will have a Saturday game in a few weeks on Peacock. They're doing the same thing for the playoffs. So now you need 4-5 streaming accounts to watch what used to be on normal TV.

Watch what happens to digital libraries. Youll have 500 movies/TV shows that'll be subjected to an ongoing $5/mo access fee to support the infrastructure of them maintaining your digital library for you.

It's all coming. Physical movies are already going up in resale value, because people are realizing the best way to own your entertainment is to have the physical copy, and not rent the license from a corporation.
I think you're correct about potential monthly maintenance fees from retailers like Vudu in the future for streaming purchased content. Alternatively, they might offer ad-supported viewing or encourage regular purchases to avoid ads or fees. I used to have a vast Blu-ray movie collection that I sold, transitioning to a digital-only library. It's much easier, especially when moving. I "own" over 800 movies across platforms like Vudu, iTunes, Amazon, and MoviesAnywhere. I wouldn't be surprised to see a 'convenience fee' for streaming in the future after physical media becomes less common.

You are wildly overestimating how many physical discs actually sell for a premium

Just a heads up that during their early access Black Friday sale, I purchased 8 of their 4k movies that they had priced at 9.99. I ordered them for shipping and apparently Best Buy lets individual stores do their shipping for certain items, because these were definitely shipped from a Best Buy store and not a warehouse. I know this because these idiots put those giant red stickers on all of my movies with my name on there, then tossed all 8 movies in a freaking giant bubble mailer and mailed them to me. Needless to say, if you care anything at all about the condition of your slipcovers, wait for Walmart, Target, or Amazon to match these prices because it's clear that since Best Buy is phasing their physical movies out, they seriously don't give a crap about these products. I've had decent shipping from them in the past, but this was just ridiculous and I won't be buying any movies from them during their sales.
