Regardless if you decide to buy this particular unit or not, one KEY specification you should locate prior to purchase with any home "A/V type" Receiver:

Bolded effect added by me for emphasis -

Power output (All channels):

200 W/Ch (6 ohms, 1 kHz, 10% THD,1-ch driven)

90 W/Ch (8 ohms, 20 Hz-20 kHz, 0.08% THD,
2-ch driven, FTC)

Hope this information is insightful / helpful.

God damnit. I got burned hard by a bad HDMI board from Onkyo years ago. It was a giant recall that the old heads in here will remember. But for this price I'm thinking of rolling the dice again. SMH I'll never learn.

Slim to none.

This is the cheapest I've ever seen this receiver.

I paid $500 for this same unit in March of 2022. I have been using it since then to run LCR and Sub in our family room and using the zone 2 to run in-ceiling speakers throughout the rest of the house. I would do it again.

I am guessing there are 1 or 2 newer models out there, but if you don't need the latest features (I don't know what they are) this is a good unit.

I remember thinking there were some quarks with it initially, but I have either gotten used to them or they were fixed with a firmware update.

You have to ask yourself, what are you going to do with pre-outs? Are you going to connect an external amp to drive certain speakers separately? Do your front speakers benefit from being driven by external amp? As someone mentioned earlier, most home theater speakers are quite efficient and do not benefit by being driven via external amp.
I was asking someone else why he bought an avr without pre outs when he wanted one with them. Lol.

Speakers have a sensitivity rating. Should be posted in the specs on the back of the speaker. A 90db speaker will play much louder at the same volume dial on your receiver than a 85db speaker.

Basically, the higher the db rating the easier they are to power. Many Klipsch speakers have sensitivity ratings at 95db or higher.

Doesn't mean the speaker is better sounding, just means it takes less power/wattage to get to a certain volume level.
Klipsch's sensitivity ratings are totally sus. They use a different metric than everyone else to confuse customers.

Request advice- I have Monoprice 5.1.2 speakers. Manual says, max speaker input of 100W.

Will this receiver with 200W per channel output work with speakers I have?

Thank you.
Unless your speakers are 4 ohm rated, the actual power rating is 90 w/channel into 8 ohms which is standard. Also Dynamic power ratings are similar to peak power and used by labs who test bursts of power rather than continuous. The only TRUE power rating is RMS into 8 ohms. Hope that helps

Believe it or not most of the time when a speaker is damaged by an amp, it's a low power amp that clipped when pushed beyond its limits.
Plus......This receiver does not output 200 W
This is what an amplifier that can output 200W per channel looks like [mcintoshlabs.com] and even then, under certain testing conditions.
This amp .....under the right conditions might output 90 W at best!

BTW: 100 watt max input speakers?? They must be small or satt.

Yes, it should.
You won't have ARC over HDMI so you will have to run a separate audio return.

Pretty much! Last year they were a $500 Costco exclusive and I'm pretty sure no longer carried. I'm guessing these are bought-out old stock.

Either way, I'm super happy with mine, it's powered my Infinity R253 towers and RC263 center. This is my 2nd Onkyo receiver, the first worked flawlessly for a decade and I finally upgraded to this one primarily for 4k pass-though.

I don't understand the point of a receiver...can someone educate me?

I have a PS5, Switch, Apple TV connected to my TV with an LG Soundbar and it's handled by eARC I believe. Switching inputs is kind of slow, but I don't know if that's just my TV. The most annoying thing for me is sometimes the Soundbar will randomly switch to Optical and I need to cycle thru the options to get it back to eARC.

Would a receiver help with any of that? Would it let me plug in my record player to use the soundbar as an input too?

Remember it well.

Had a little 'side hustle' / hobby ~ 10 years ago fixing these Onkyo's.

Bot them at GoodWill/CraigsList/FaceBook for $15/$20...spent ~ $3 on some caps and 15 minutes with a soldering iron.

Did about a dozen of them and netted maybe $500.
