4k 120hz work well? That's the main reason I want to upgrade but I've heard so much about passthrough issues the past two 3 years I don't know what to try

For $400 I would prefer to be in the x series for the Audyssey MultEQ XT. This model is top of the entry series so tough call

I believe the x2800h hasn't reached this price, $100 more.

To be fair the 3800 adds much more for the price.

On the flip side, other than power, audibly there isn't a big difference compared to the x4800h.

Would this be a good upgrade from a pioneer vsx-42 receiver with the polk monitor 70 towers, polk center channel, psw505 sub and pioneer andrew jones bookshelf speakers as rears?

It's a great value at 1000, imo. I paid 950 for my 3700 3 years ago and before all the inflation and thought I was getting a good deal. It was a noticeable upgrade in SQ with my existing speakers compared to my old receiver which I previously thought sounded pretty good. Bass mgmt was vastly better and even my wife noticed the overall improvement in SQ. Everyone has a budget to adhere too but the 3800 with the 3 year warranty for 1000 is a very attractive package that you should get many years of use out of if you go that rout.

The 2800 for 500 is also a good deal at it's price point.

sound wise me thinks negligible. there seems to be only a 10 watt power diff bet either receiver. if you value the more modern amenities it might be a decent pivot for the price.

i want to like it too but it does not look like i can add a amp to it.
