For the uninitiated: you must have an Intel based syno with Intel graphics in order to transcode 4k vid.
Depending on your TV setup and codec used for your source of media transcoding is or isn't needed. That's why some people think 'it works'

A while back synology switched to AMD with no built in graphics. Some of the units on sale here are the bottom of the barrel cpu that's neither AMD nor Intel nor does it play 4k or 1080p even.

I recently bought and returned a DS223J. Absolute garbage. Even the basic NAS functionality was trash. It was god awful slow and froze up after a few days. I don't know if their beefier units are better but their budget ones can't even act as a basic file server. I wanted something to act as a media server for just one TV and I couldn't even load it up with stuff.

DS224+ (also 920+, 423+, 220+, 720+, 1520+) supports 4k transcoding with inbuilt GPU (rest Synology does not or very incapable). Adding RAM also help in overall performance. DS224+ is Value buy for first time Plex users (add more RAM to make it 6GB . RAMs are very inexpensive )

QNAP TS-464 has everything you need for Plex but little expensive.

FYI: 4k transcoding is mostly needed when you want to play your Plex content on mobile/ipad (assuming you have plex pass). On home TV, you rarely need 4k transcoding.

For non-Plex users , most of the NAS are fine.

My DS920+ has been running plex for over a year, even use it with my HDHomeRun for local channel watchings and DVR. With that said I do agree they need to start using newer Intel processors. The newest DS224+ is still using the Intel Celeron J4125 which is in my now 4 year old DS920+. And although my soundbar/tv can display pretty much everything without transcoding it's still nice to have the option for streaming to a phone.

Can the slickdeals gurus help me out as a noob?

I have a DS220+ lined up via facebook marketplace for $150. Seller says its lightly used, we've swapped a bunch of messages about general NAS stuff and I trust him that it's in good condition.

I was waiting to see if we'd see a deal on the DS224+. With tax I figure the DS224+ will cost about $125 more than the used DS220+.

Is the DS220+ still a good value at $150? Or is the 224+ enough of an upgrade that I should splurge for it?

I also need to buy hard drives, and I am going to use an old very low power 12" macbook m3 powered laptop for plex. I'm not so worried about the computing aspect with the DS220+.

I will just use the synology for file hosting, backup, misc. neat stuff I assume I can run through docker.

I am a long time 4 bay synology user, I don't have an issue with transcoding (use home theater pc and don't stream media). Home user for backup and media primarily.

What are some advantages for QNAP over synology? How's their version of DSM? Can you run docker and sabnzbd, etc. on it?

I was thinking of upgrading my Jellyfin setup of an RPi with an attached external HDD but based on these comments perhaps I should hold.

220+ on Ebay runs a little over $200 so $150 is a pretty good deal. Can't speak a lot to the 224+ but the 220 would be more than sufficient. I think all you really get is upgraded cpu from 2 to 4 cores. 220 has an extra memory slot (4 gigs) plus dual lan ports like the 224 so nothing to be gained there.
