As someone who doesn't have a nas but did plenty of research I'd reccomend not getting this, get the 220+ or later. Upon researching this model is extremely limited. Even if only for photos you need a faster cpu/ram to do the AI features like facial recognition. A used 220+ is about $200 and the new 224+ goes on sale for $250ish

How about using it just for network storage because I have a dedicated "server" I use for running plex/photoprism/nextcloud etc. Is it good for that purpose?

Hi CoolAppliance356!!
Is this only for LAN connected devices?
If I have a laptop, how do I access this? Does it have wifi?
Thanks.

From my research it's PERFECT for that. It's when people try the ai features and loading photo thumbnails that is lags. And docker. For file storage it's great and is essentially a 3 bay cuz u can add a usb hdd

Agreed, it's great for file storing but it's limitations on processor hampers it doing other things.

I have this exact model and use it mainly for photo and document storage. I would agree with previous posts to get the next model up as it is a bit slow with loading. It does get the job done, just not as quick as I would prefer.
Spend the extra money now and save a lot of time in the future

Your opinion is what I've been hearing. It's just slow enough to make it an annoyance. I was told when browsing through photos it takes a second to load. Considering with good drives your at $400 I'd rather spend the same $400 for the + and get slightly less storage

100% agree. I have the 220j and it's barely functional. The only thing I can say it's decent at is keeping folders and documents on a PC synced/backed up. I use it for backing up photos and videos from my iPhone, and while it does get the job done, it's painful slow.
Indexing indexing indexing….
As soon as pictures begin backing up, the NAS also starts generating thumbnails and indexing. At this point, everything slows to a crawl INCLUDING the photo backup. Even logging in and trying to use the file browser while this is happening takes minutes at a time to navigate to a new folder. Thumbnail generation takes somewhere between 20-40seconds PER photo too. So if you backup hundreds of photos, this thing is useless for hours.
I'm looking to snag a 224+ the next time it's on sale

Same on the 224+. U think we'll see $250 this year? I actually want the 720+ because even a $25 m.2 nvme cache drive would make things like thumbnails infinitely faster
These purpose built NAS devices are good for the daily people. It probably requires less time and effort to setup and maintain.
If you're tech savvy, you can also DIY your own. Just get a PC with low idle power consumption, add HDDs or SSDs to it. There are free and often open source operating systems that you can install.

My pain point is there no easy way to view the photos that are no longer local on the device and live on the NAS
Before buying I wanted to confirm this thing is fast enough to run a torrent client or that one exists for synology devices
