Depending on your TV setup and codec used for your source of media transcoding is or isn't needed. That's why some people think 'it works'
A while back synology switched to AMD with no built in graphics. Some of the units on sale here are the bottom of the barrel cpu that's neither AMD nor Intel nor does it play 4k or 1080p even.
QNAP TS-464 has everything you need for Plex but little expensive.
FYI: 4k transcoding is mostly needed when you want to play your Plex content on mobile/ipad (assuming you have plex pass). On home TV, you rarely need 4k transcoding.
For non-Plex users , most of the NAS are fine.

DS224+ = Intel Celeron J4125 Quad-Core, 2.0 GHz / 2.7 GHz
DS923+ = AMD Ryzen R1600 2-core 2.6 (base) / 3.1 (turbo) GHz
Meh
What are some advantages for QNAP over synology? How's their version of DSM? Can you run docker and sabnzbd, etc. on it?
QTS isn't nearly as polished as DSM however. It's more complicated and needs (and is getting) more development. It will do pretty much everything DSM will and more, though it may do it differently or not as well (at least at the moment).
I look at it this way: DSM is fantastic but is hamstrung by shit hardware and proprietary upgrades. Doesn't matter how good the software is if it I can't get it to do what I want because it's slow/laggy as hell because the hardware is shit to begin with and can't be easily/affordably upgraded over the life of the unit. No amount of software wizardry and conjolery and make up for the fact that the hardware physically can't handle the work/tasks in the manner with which I want it done.
QTS will only get better and with the massively better hardware and far more open nature of the platform (out of the box), both on the hardware and software (meaning it's potentially more complicated but you can configure it the way you want), it's the better long term bet.
Synology is for the Ronco crowd that are willing to make some sacrifices in order for it to be simple: set it and forget it. QNAP is for those of us that are willing/able to go more in depth in terms of set up/configuration and potentially with maintenance in order to have better performance.

If Synology brought out a new unit next year with built in 2.5Gb or 10Gb along with a actual current CPU I'll upgrade. If they don't have anything next year I might have to switch to QNAP. Plan on proactively replacing my DS920+ and drives sometime end of next year so will be buying something either way.
