For the uninitiated: you must have an Intel based syno with Intel graphics in order to transcode 4k vid.
Depending on your TV setup and codec used for your source of media transcoding is or isn't needed. That's why some people think 'it works'

A while back synology switched to AMD with no built in graphics. Some of the units on sale here are the bottom of the barrel cpu that's neither AMD nor Intel nor does it play 4k or 1080p even.

I recently bought and returned a DS223J. Absolute garbage. Even the basic NAS functionality was trash. It was god awful slow and froze up after a few days. I don't know if their beefier units are better but their budget ones can't even act as a basic file server. I wanted something to act as a media server for just one TV and I couldn't even load it up with stuff.

DS224+ (also 920+, 423+, 220+, 720+, 1520+) supports 4k transcoding with inbuilt GPU (rest Synology does not or very incapable). Adding RAM also help in overall performance. DS224+ is Value buy for first time Plex users (add more RAM to make it 6GB . RAMs are very inexpensive )

QNAP TS-464 has everything you need for Plex but little expensive.

FYI: 4k transcoding is mostly needed when you want to play your Plex content on mobile/ipad (assuming you have plex pass). On home TV, you rarely need 4k transcoding.

For non-Plex users , most of the NAS are fine.

This right here is keeping me in my Synology DS920+. I have a USB3 to 2.5Gb Ethernet adapter on it that works flawlessly and the DSM interface is just so far ahead of QNAPs. But the hardware is old for todays standard.

If Synology brought out a new unit next year with built in 2.5Gb or 10Gb along with a actual current CPU I'll upgrade. If they don't have anything next year I might have to switch to QNAP. Plan on proactively replacing my DS920+ and drives sometime end of next year so will be buying something either way.
Completely understandable. DSM is a great product.

Everyone's ideal turnkey NAS: QNAP hardware with Synology software. Unfortunately it would be about $800 for a four bay. Ha ha

Forget serving video with these hunks of junk. I refuse to buy synology until they stop cheaping out on processors. Can't even run plex...
Huh? It all depends on what you're doing. I run Plex on a DS416play and if I'm not transcoding HQ, it plays fine. I imagine these models are even better

Hey - if it had SSD cache and a 10Gb ethernet built in I'd consider it.

I've had zero issues running Plex on my Synology. But I stream to Roku devices and allow it to do all the processing and don't do any encoding on the Synology itself.

Question about plex, can't you just run this as local area hard drive and just stream right off without transcoding? Do you really need a plex server to watch things locally? Can't we tell plex the source of videos and let it just play back on TV using the plex app? What's the advantage of running plex server separately?

the files have to live somewhere. if they're on a server (which could be a laptop with the files saved on them somewhere) it streams off of that. you can't put the videos on a HDD and plug it into an apple tv for example.

It doesn't need a additional GPU, it's already built into the CPU. So those models will do 4k transcoding out of the box. I own a DS920+ and play 4k rips transcoded on my cell phone with no issues.
Additional GPU mean in addition to normal processor. (not external GPU) . Updated though.

Yes and you said:

Which is not true. They transcode 4k by themselves without anything additional as the GPU is part of the processor.

Thanks so much, I actually forgot about this.. You are right now that I remember I think I used Pi4 before for this. But now most TVs have media player option, and some of them can play using Kodi, so those can play straight from local or network HDD.

QNAP's hardware is far better and it usually has the advantage in flexibility and upgradability. These are massive wins in my book and can/will extend the life of the unit and therefore make it a better bang for buck.

QTS isn't nearly as polished as DSM however. It's more complicated and needs (and is getting) more development. It will do pretty much everything DSM will and more, though it may do it differently or not as well (at least at the moment).
As somebody who's only recently started looking into a NAS setup and is undecided between the two I appreciate the explanation. Could you weigh in on QNAP's ransomware issues? I heard that they had a couple of incidents a few years back, but I'm not sure how much that should concern me since I'm not super tuned into this space.

Agree with the new ones. Only the 423+ is the only new one that is intel based and can handle plex hardware transcoding. All the other ones have AMD or something else that does not support plex hardware transcoding well. If you do get the AMD processors, there's a $150-$200 hardware addon called ZimaBoard that apparently can be purchased and added externally to load hardware transcoding to it. But then it's an extra cost.

Here's video of where I saw it: https://youtube.com/watch?v=nuIkV3ZCowE

EDIT: I originally put 923+ instead of 423+. The 923+ has AMD processor which cannot do hardware transcoding. The 423+ has Inter processor which can handle hardware transcoding for Plex.

Oh okay. So your solution to synology changing a cpu to save them 5$ is for you to buy a 400$ dedicated plex server. Cool cool.

Interestingly enough QNAP has tons of options in the same price range with an HDMI port. It's pretty clever way to work around the problem of transcoding by skipping transcoding altogether.
How much do you think a 2012 mac mini is worth? I got it for $50 off facebook marketplace - and its running other apps besides plex for me. Seems like a more than fair tradeoff IMO - especially since remember...my setup is using a 2016 synology...and has been running without issue for the last 7 years.

Sounds like user error.

While the deal itself here is decent, Newegg itself is a terrible company now. Newegg inflates pricing significantly sometimes and does 'deals' to make you think you are getting a great deal. WD Red Pro's come to mind. The current price on Newegg for those Red Pros makes you think you are 'saving' 40~% off when that is complete BS. They have had horrible business practices now ever since they got bought out.

As a point, I have generally stayed away from Newegg for years. Their customer service and return policy / procedures are terrible too.

So please take what I said into consideration when browsing for potential deals from Newegg.
