For the uninitiated: you must have an Intel based syno with Intel graphics in order to transcode 4k vid.
Depending on your TV setup and codec used for your source of media transcoding is or isn't needed. That's why some people think 'it works'

A while back synology switched to AMD with no built in graphics. Some of the units on sale here are the bottom of the barrel cpu that's neither AMD nor Intel nor does it play 4k or 1080p even.

I recently bought and returned a DS223J. Absolute garbage. Even the basic NAS functionality was trash. It was god awful slow and froze up after a few days. I don't know if their beefier units are better but their budget ones can't even act as a basic file server. I wanted something to act as a media server for just one TV and I couldn't even load it up with stuff.

DS224+ (also 920+, 423+, 220+, 720+, 1520+) supports 4k transcoding with inbuilt GPU (rest Synology does not or very incapable). Adding RAM also help in overall performance. DS224+ is Value buy for first time Plex users (add more RAM to make it 6GB . RAMs are very inexpensive )

QNAP TS-464 has everything you need for Plex but little expensive.

FYI: 4k transcoding is mostly needed when you want to play your Plex content on mobile/ipad (assuming you have plex pass). On home TV, you rarely need 4k transcoding.

For non-Plex users , most of the NAS are fine.

I was thinking of upgrading my Jellyfin setup of an RPi with an attached external HDD but based on these comments perhaps I should hold.
In the same boat with my Pi4 and Plex, however going with a ZimaCube. May want to check that out

A 220+ is my Plex server and has zero issues with 4k transcoding. Maxed out the ram and use both lan ports. Never had problem.

DS223j = Realtek RTD1619B, 64-bit, 4-core 1.7 GHz
DS224+ = Intel Celeron J4125 Quad-Core, 2.0 GHz / 2.7 GHz
DS923+ = AMD Ryzen R1600 2-core 2.6 (base) / 3.1 (turbo) GHz

Same, I want at TS-664 or a TS-464 and really don't wanna settle for another NAS.
In the same boat. Been watching the 462/464 for months. Eventually settled on the 464. The only thing that's held me back is that I don't technically NEED it and the $625 (with tax) price tag. If I could get it for that $480 price, I'd laugh like a little girl.

I am a long time 4 bay synology user, I don't have an issue with transcoding (use home theater pc and don't stream media). Home user for backup and media primarily.

What are some advantages for QNAP over synology? How's their version of DSM? Can you run docker and sabnzbd, etc. on it?
QNAP's hardware is far better and it usually has the advantage in flexibility and upgradability. These are massive wins in my book and can/will extend the life of the unit and therefore make it a better bang for buck.

QTS isn't nearly as polished as DSM however. It's more complicated and needs (and is getting) more development. It will do pretty much everything DSM will and more, though it may do it differently or not as well (at least at the moment).

I look at it this way: DSM is fantastic but is hamstrung by shit hardware and proprietary upgrades. Doesn't matter how good the software is if it I can't get it to do what I want because it's slow/laggy as hell because the hardware is shit to begin with and can't be easily/affordably upgraded over the life of the unit. No amount of software wizardry and conjolery and make up for the fact that the hardware physically can't handle the work/tasks in the manner with which I want it done.

QTS will only get better and with the massively better hardware and far more open nature of the platform (out of the box), both on the hardware and software (meaning it's potentially more complicated but you can configure it the way you want), it's the better long term bet.

Synology is for the Ronco crowd that are willing to make some sacrifices in order for it to be simple: set it and forget it. QNAP is for those of us that are willing/able to go more in depth in terms of set up/configuration and potentially with maintenance in order to have better performance.

I think some people expect quite a lot from a basic NAS device. For what these actually are, they are quite good IMO. I'm still running the 2016 model with no issues. The synology UX and apps are all really excellent as is the ability to share files without having to grant access to everything. Unlike most people in this thread, I use the device for storage of media only, with a 2012 Mac mini actually running my Plex environment. The Synology is just for the storage of files, backups, and accessing of content on my LAN

Can the slickdeals gurus help me out as a noob?
I think that unit for that price is fine. Use it and in a year or two if it's not doing everything you want you can upgrade to a DS224 and just move the drives over without having to resetup anything.

You bought the cheapest lowest powered NAS they make and are complaining that it's slow. Either you did something wrong or you were expecting too much. The fact that you said "it froze up after a few days" tells me there is a lot more to this and I doubt it's Synology's fault.

I have a DS418Play hooked up to an HDHomerun Extend. The Extend does transcoding so my 418Play records OTA programming fine. I use their Videostation app, but I still can't find a good free programming guide. The TMDB api built in doesn't work to populate OTA schedules. Any ideas on one that is free? I think it has to be an api to work cause there are a few that are xml that seem to be OK but just can't get them to work on Videostation.

This right here is keeping me in my Synology DS920+. I have a USB3 to 2.5Gb Ethernet adapter on it that works flawlessly and the DSM interface is just so far ahead of QNAPs. But the hardware is old for todays standard.

If Synology brought out a new unit next year with built in 2.5Gb or 10Gb along with a actual current CPU I'll upgrade. If they don't have anything next year I might have to switch to QNAP. Plan on proactively replacing my DS920+ and drives sometime end of next year so will be buying something either way.

It doesn't need a additional GPU, it's already built into the CPU. So those models will do 4k transcoding out of the box. I own a DS920+ and play 4k rips transcoded on my cell phone with no issues.

The DS224+ is overall better, especially if you plan on using it for Plex. I'd see if you can return yours still.

Is it that bad? Dang. Been waiting on a BF sale! Never had one before. I have been using a Netgear router to run my Plexโ€ฆ I guess I'll stick with that for now.

Software? No though QTS has a bit more flexibility if you are willing to use something less polished. Worst case, I install something else on it if I really want to. DSM is superior though.

Hardware? By a country mile.
