Depending on your TV setup and codec used for your source of media transcoding is or isn't needed. That's why some people think 'it works'
A while back synology switched to AMD with no built in graphics. Some of the units on sale here are the bottom of the barrel cpu that's neither AMD nor Intel nor does it play 4k or 1080p even.
QNAP TS-464 has everything you need for Plex but little expensive.
FYI: 4k transcoding is mostly needed when you want to play your Plex content on mobile/ipad (assuming you have plex pass). On home TV, you rarely need 4k transcoding.
For non-Plex users , most of the NAS are fine.

If Synology brought out a new unit next year with built in 2.5Gb or 10Gb along with a actual current CPU I'll upgrade. If they don't have anything next year I might have to switch to QNAP. Plan on proactively replacing my DS920+ and drives sometime end of next year so will be buying something either way.
Everyone's ideal turnkey NAS: QNAP hardware with Synology software. Unfortunately it would be about $800 for a four bay.

QTS isn't nearly as polished as DSM however. It's more complicated and needs (and is getting) more development. It will do pretty much everything DSM will and more, though it may do it differently or not as well (at least at the moment).
Here's video of where I saw it: https://youtube.com/watch?v=nuIkV3Z
EDIT: I originally put 923+ instead of 423+. The 923+ has AMD processor which cannot do hardware transcoding. The 423+ has Inter processor which can handle hardware transcoding for Plex.
Interestingly enough QNAP has tons of options in the same price range with an HDMI port. It's pretty clever way to work around the problem of transcoding by skipping transcoding altogether.

As a point, I have generally stayed away from Newegg for years. Their customer service and return policy / procedures are terrible too.
So please take what I said into consideration when browsing for potential deals from Newegg.
