Seriously why aren't these half the price they typically charge for water? There's no ingredients besides water, carbonation and a tiny droplet of essential oil or other flavor. Without a sweetener what is so expensive in making these?

Nothing, and back in the day when your options were mostly regional brands and a couple fancy names like Perrier, it wasn't. 12 pack cans could routinely be had for $2 or less. I think I remember 3/$4.50 on a good sale or certainly 3/$5 about 10 years ago. But it gained in popularity and big companies wanted a piece of the pie- Bubly by Pepsi being a prime example. But instead of economies of scale and competition driving down the price, Pepsi and others pushed the envelope on pricing and the US consumer stupidly bought into the marketing and premium price. Bubly still commands a premium for some silly reason, but the rising tide lifts all boats and now it's more expensive for everybody. 👎

24 pack from Sam's club is 9.48 at regular price , or $.40/can. This is marginally better at $0.375/can, though Sam's often has coupons

I guess if you want a variety it's decent. Aldi might be a better deal per can otherwise. I want to say it's $4 or less for 12 but don't remember offhand

Whenever you see a product like this that has sustained a price that's well above what it should be, it's a consequence of capitalism, IMO. If consumers see value in these beverages and are willing to pay a premium, the company has little incentive to lower prices, especially if they've established a strong brand or there's limited competition. So, while it might seem that these drinks should be cheaper, the dynamics of supply, demand, and consumer behavior in a capitalist system play a huge role in setting their price.
