- Pay off installment plan from MyAtt app or at att.com. You can do this as soon as activated/device ships.
- Turn on iPhone and let it activate with the pushed AT&T eSim (should be automatic once connected to wifi). Make a phone call.

- Make a call on the unlocked iPhone. Check in myAtt or att.com and check every few minutes until the unlocked iPhone shows up in your account as your device.

- Check email and click to acknowledge unlock request. May take a few minutes to receive this.
- Wait for unlock approval email. It could take only a few minutes or up to a day
- new iPhone will be unlocked once you try a different provider eSIM. You can either use a new eSIM or transfer one from your other iPhone.
- If you want to, cancel AT&T service over chat or phone so that you don't go beyond 3 days post activation. If you instead want to keep the service, do everything I mentioned above to bring your monthly cost down.
Edit: AT&T chat is closed on the weekend I called reseller support and they refused to cancel the line and said I had to wait 30 days. I had to port out to another carrier.- Call *PORT on the new iPhone to get a porting pin. You also need your wireless account number (displayed when you login to att.com).
- I had a great experience porting to usmobile.com for their 50 day free trial. Just sign up and fill out the details including port (AT&T Postpaid, account number, port pin). Transfer completed in minutes!

- We haven't found a way to unlock the iPhone 14/15 like we did the 13 because it has an eSIM assigned that gets activated on boot, and no physical SIM card. Also the phones are showing Verizon locked and not flex reseller policy. It will automatically unlock 60 days post activation however.

2 years ago I did it online instead because I wanted a 512 gig phone (stores only carry 128/256) and that e-gift card did not arrive until about 2 weeks after the phone got activated. I was worried for a while, but it came through.

You sign a contract whether online or in store and agree to the financing terms to get the phone. Breach of contract on will result in the cell phone company going after you for the remaining balance and or any early termination fees. So cancelling without paying off the phone's remaining balance due will trigger the collections process.
Phone takes 2 to 3 days for FedEx delivery depending on the time of day your order is processed and made it out for the last pickup of the day at their fulfillment center. One year I received it on Friday and another year I received it on Saturday for a Wednesday online order.
Cancel within 3 days? So if you are referring to ordering on Wednesday, receive the phone on Friday, and then cancel the line after the phone is delivered, how can you pay it off without breaching the contract and trigger the collections process? I believe this will void the unlocking requirements and that phone will only work on ATT network or MVNOs.
Furthermore online orders do not receive the e-gift cards right away like an in store purchase. I had to wait about 2 weeks for the email to arrive after phone delivery and activation. It had me worried the first time it happened. I am not sure if anyone has cancelled their ATT line within 3 days and still able to receive the e-gift card. I hope they can chime in with their experience if they had done it.
If I need an extra phone, I usually i just add a new line on Black Friday to get the phone, pay it off online after 60 days, fill out the ATT unlock form online and within a few days of receiving email the unlock request has been fulfilled, I insert a non ATT SIM card to verify unlocking and then call 611 to cancel that line.
Just upgrade your existing line.
As a matter of fact if you trade in a phone, you will be entering billing credits jail for 36 months.
Just do what you did the prior years, it is the same deal and process every year. They do not touch your existing plan unless you get a commission hungry unscrupulous sales rep at the cell phone kiosk and sell you on a new plan. Be sure to tell them NO plan change, phone upgrade financing only. If you are wary, review the paperwork before you sign and go pay the taxes on the phone. Once you pay at the register, you should be receiving the e-gift card number and PIN via email right afterwards. Mine have always come in under 5 minutes for the past several years. Great to use it as a down payment on the next phone.
