I'd be concerned about Roast Date, too. You can never tell why a bag of coffee is suddenly on sale--maybe they're trying to liquidate old inventory, which isn't gonna taste great.

Best practice is to either order online from a roasted-to-order coffee vendor, or go to your nicest nearby grocery store (Whole Foods, Wegmans, etc.) and actually look at everything available on the wall so you can flip to the roast dates on each one and pick out the freshest one.

Quality of the grocery store can greatly affect how fresh the coffee is depending on how often they get orders or how quickly the product moves. I can find Intelligentsia coffee at one grocery store and the roasting date indicates it's maybe 3 weeks old, while at a different store down the road, it might be six months old.

Will Whole Foods price match? Would be interested if I could guarantee a reasonably recent roast date...

Between this and the other Kicking Horse deal on Amazon - anyone have any opinion on the better value/better coffee?

As far I I have seen, the Kicking Horse has been the best deal. Maybe someone else can chime in and advise.

Thank you so much! It makes complete sense.

Same. I gave it a try more than a few times, but they were all kinda meh.
I bought some from Amazon as well as from a grocery store, so it's not the storage issue.

Very roast date dependent. That aside, I find Stumptown to be far better than Kickinghorse

Stumptown is actual third wave coffee. However, I agree with being cautious buying on amazon due to the roast dates being so old. Same issue with buying at the grocery stores most of the time.

If you don't shave, you wear undershirts during summer, and you ride a fixie, Stumptown is the easily the best.

Joking aside, Stumptown is good.

Hmm, yeah, likely older stock Frown. From a Nov 11 review [emphasis mine]:
Quote :
The flavor was smooth but nothing special. I expecting something above average but this wasn't it. And I don't mind paying extra for a fresher roasted pack of beans. But the one I received was roasted 9/1, and received 11/10. Not planning to order this way again.

FYI this particular brand is relatively on the citrusy/fruity / acidic coffee (which I didn't really like) but some people love this stuff.
For those who enjoy South American/ dark chocolate/bold coffee, look elsewhere.
