In case you are looking at this as a solution for streaming games from your desktop to another room, please be aware that GeForce Experience and Nvidia no longer support GameStream.

Sunshine and Moonlight are the server-client pair of apps you will want to use to do any LAN game streaming. They are relatively easy to set up, but it's something you should know about before purchasing if you intend to use this as a game streaming device.

Sunshine: https://github.com/LizardByte/Sunshine
Moonlight: https://github.com/moonlight-stream/moonlight-qt
GameStream sunset announcement: https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/a...tification

As for performance, I have not had any issues at all with this model of Shield. I used it to replace the smart features on a 2016 Samsung TV that was getting progressively more annoying and losing support for applications like Twitch.

I was a diehard Shield user. I switched to the Apple 4k. Did obsessive side by sides. In my experience, the apple has better color and picture quailty. Nothing is perfect as the sound quailty on the shield is better than apples 4k. I only stream no gaming.

It's 4 years old, but still one of the best streaming devices on the market. I'm still using a 2017 model and it's great
Also, I use Retroarch and final burn alpha on it. Works as a very good emulator for MAME/arcade, Genesis, SNES, NES, and even N64 games. You can play with supported wireless controllers.

sounds like a user issue. No lag on either of my shield (pro or tube) streaming local media or web streaming. Check your network.
It's not a user issue. It's an 8 year old hardware and 3 years out of date software issue. Freshly repasted, factory reset, connected to a 1.2Gb internet connection via Ethernet. Nothing but stutters and sync issues. Set at 60Hz, video stutters, but audio is in sync. Set to 24/30Hz, Video looks great, but audio is out of sync.

It should not require tweaking, adjusting of settings, or ANY effort to play video smoothly and in sync with audio.

this should be like a $100 max with how old it is.

I'm with a lot of other people on this, it used to be one of the best devices out there and it's still really good, but it's starting to suffer. Is this a good price? Sure, when comparing it to itself, but when compared to other things out there? not so much anymore, as the gap between the shield and other devices has shrunk a lot, and in some cases, it sounds like apple has surpassed them on a few fronts.

I mostly use it as my plex server, but it's having issues there, although I think a lot of that has to do with Plex, not the shield. I can try to watch content straight from plex on the shield and it has issues, but watch the same content via plex on a computer and no issues. So as a plex server it still seems to be fine, but as a plex player, not so much.

Trying to wait for a new model. Have the 2017 model but this doesn't seem worth it for just Dolby vision

Not really a deal anymore, technology moves fast and this thing, although good, is a dinosaur and needs a refresh.

I purchased the Nvidia Shield TV a few months ago and was disappointed, I returned it. I mainly bought it for 4K upscaling as I read that Nvidia is the best in the market for 4K upscaling, but the Shield TV picture quality was less than my Fire Stick. Does the Pro make a big difference in terms of 4K upscaling? That's the only reason I might invest in this buy.

This is the only device I know that can remotely play 4k on Plex, others struggle, sometimes even with 1080p, at least with my server setup.

I've had one of these for 3 years now. It's a great box, but I'll have to admit, the apps on it, even with current updates, don't seem as nice as the ones I'm using native on some other LG TVs I have. In fact, I've had it on a OLED 65" C2, because 3 years ago, the apps weren't all there for the TVs. They are now. The picture quality on the Prime Video native app on my TV crushes the one on the Shield Pro for example.

I've found it to be a mixed bag. Generally the built in apps do seem to look cleaner than what the shield produces. Barely tho. it's mostly the better scaled UI. However for upscaling particularly lower quality content I find the Shield Pro's AI to make a noticeable difference. The official YouTube app on the shield also doesn't support HDR/Dolby which is disappointing. For Netflix, Amazon and Max I generally use the built in apps. For everything else I have several apps I can sideload onto the Shield that the TV wont let me. I also find GeForce Now to work better on the Shield. But I realize that the majority of folks probably aren't that tech needy.

What user fault could there possibly be? It doesn't work reliably after a factory reset on a wired connection. It's a $200 product that can't reliably perform it's main function. That's not acceptable. The Shield used to be great.

Would you buy an iPhone 6S in 2023? That's the same era of hardware in a current Shield.

Defective? Bad apps loaded ?

IF there wasn't an iphone 15 hyped up machine behind it, you would buy the Iphone 6s too if it was still the best around.

then return it and move on. The shield is not for you then.
